The westbound Zephyr is between Simms Street and 80th avenue, running right on time, on a beautiful Father's Day morning. The Denver skyline stands tall in the distance and you can see that the ditch lights are oscillating on the lead unit, horn blowing for the 80th Avenue crossing.

A couple of unusual things to note about the westbound Zephyr in this shot on Father's Day morning. First, the lead unit is P40DC #824. Now, technically, this unit has been rebuilt to P42DC standards, but the number makes it a bit unusual as not many (ex) P40DCs are still running on Amtrak's roster. The second oddity is the lack of a baggage car. Interestingly, the is actually the norm for the Southwest Chief to run without a baggage car, but that is far less common with the Zephyr.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Rocky Mountaineer
Sunday morning means we find the westbound Rocky Mountaineer's "Rockies to the Red Rocks" just west of Denver. The nine car train (plus a power car on the very end) appears to be sold out, which is great news (of course) for the train. Tonight, passenger's will stay at the Hotel Denver in Glenwood Springs, continuing on the Moab, UT tomorrow.

UP's MNYGR (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Green River, WY) departs from North Yard six days a week, typically departing right after the Zephyr and, when necessary, the Rocky Mountaineer have passed by. Here, the train is crossing over the South Platte River on the Belt Industrial Lead. The lead connects North Yard to the Greeley Sub.

The long days of summer are great for having plenty of daylight to try to find trains, but the sun resting almost directly straight up in the sky results in short shadows. Black and white, with a bit of a contrast bump, actually can be quite helpful. Note the Denver skyline in the distance and the Rocky Mountains even further off in the distance as a northbound UP manifest approaches.

Just south of Rolla, a northbound UP manifest approaches the grade crossing at 96th Avenue. It appears that the yard crew at North Yard blocked the train quite nicely for its trip to Green River, WY. There, the train will likely be broken up (to some extent) before cars continue on to their final destinations.

UP 5872 has recently been rebuilt by UP from an C44AC-CTE to a C44ACM (UP's designation). In the world of expensive Tier-4 compliant units from EMD and GE (Wabtec), most railroads are starting to focus money on rebuilds rather than new planes. After the rebuild, UP 5872 also got the latest UP paint scheme, moving the American flag from the long hood to the nose, and removing the wings from the front of the nose entirely.

The Belt Industrial Lead, which connects North Yard to 36th Street Yard and the Greeley Sub, also has quite a few connections to local industries along the way. You can see two tracks that curve north toward industries in the area. Meanwhile, UP's MGRNY (Manifest, Green River, WY to North Yard, CO) approaches on the main train.

UP 7855 is slowing toward a stop on the Belt Industrial Lead. They do not have a route in to the yard yet, so the engineer will bring the train to a stop just east of Washington Street so as not to block any grade crossing while waiting to get in to North Yard.

Wanted to grab a quick roster shot of UP 6294 specifically because, under that yellow paint scheme, you'd find scarlet and gray. Indeed, the AC4400CW started life as SP 241. This summer, the unit celebrates its 29th birthday, as it was originally delivered in June of 1995.

North Yard finally has a yard track available for the arrival of this MGRNY (Manifest, Green River, WY to North Yard, CO). The train is on the single track main between Broadway and Utah Jct. The crew is looking at a restricting (lunar) signal at Utah Jct.

At Utah Jct, UP 7855 crosses over BNSF's "New North Main" on its way in to North Yard. BNSF's New North Main continues north on the other side of the diamond to BNSF's Front Range Subdivision, which runs north to Cheyenne. This diamond is one of the very few stretches of CTC for BNSF trains anywhere between Denver and Cheyenne.

This UP manifest, which just ran south on the Greeley Sub, is nearing the end of its trip to North Yard. The train is about to cross over the Moffat Sub at the diamond here at Utah Jct. The track in the foreground, the Moffat Sub, is the track the Zephyr uses twice daily between Union Station and the Rockies. UP 7855 will be taking their train in to Yard Track 5. They will cut the engines off the train and run them to "the pit" for servicing.
