Overnight in the Denver-Metro, an average of around 4" of snow fell. The Zephyr is running about two hours late this morning, and a few westbound freight trains have already come through, cleaning the snow off the rails.

It is only around 20°F (-7°C) outside this morning and there is a blanket of fresh snow greeting passengers on the Zephyr this morning as the train climbs up toward Big Ten Curve.

The rails on the siding at Eisele (Clay) are still covered with fresh snow after a January storm let about 4" of the white stuff fall overnight. The westbound Zephyr is about two hours late as it navigates the way through the curves on the main near the west end of Eisele (Clay).

The westbound Zephyr climbs the roughly 2% grade in a powdery, snow-covered scene the morning of January 8, 2024. The train has just snaked its way through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon and is about to disappear in to Tunnel 1. The first of 28 tunnels the train will pass through before reaching the Moffat Tunnel.

CP 7020, one of five military tribute units on CP's roster, happened to lead a California-bound grain train through Denver. The train is tied down here on the siding in "Hogan's Alley", awaiting for a recrew. The grain train originated in Sweetwater, MT and is destined for Modesto, CA.

In 2019, Canadian Pacific painted five units in military-inspired paint schemes in tribute to the military. The units were unveiled on Remembrance Day (Canada's version of Veterans Day in the US). CP 7020 is one of the five units, and happened to be leading a southbound grain train through Denver on January 8, 2024.

A look at the cab of the army-green SD70ACu on Canadian Pacific (now CPKC's) roster. The unit was unveiled just over four years ago in tribute to the military. The ribbon has a clever design that represents both Canada and the United States.

CP 7020, painted in a military tribute scheme, rests in the siding at Hogan's Alley with the Denver skyline offering a nice backdrop in the distance. CP 7020 is an SD70ACu, and in fact started life as an SD90MAC! Progress Rail rebuilt 60 of them for Canadian Pacific (and 100 for UP SD9043MACs for Norfolk Southern). The rebuilt unit was re-designated as an SD70ACu.

It is 9:30pm and the crossing gates at 80th Avenue are coming down in advance of a 3 1/2 hour late eastbound Zephyr. Alas, the shot of the Zephyr through the crossing did not turn out.

Denver Union Terminal (RTD) Winter Park Express
The eastbound Zephyr arrived in Denver 3 1/2 hours late this evening, but it had two extra P42DCs and five Superliners in tow. That trainset is actually the Winter Park Express! The Zephyr set out the WPE on Trak 5 at Union Station. The Zephyr then put its power back on the train on Track 4. AMTK 142 and AMTK 192 will be the power for the Winter Park Express, at least at the start of the season. It is a rather cold 15°F (-10°C) on the platform at Union Station this evening.

The eastbound Zephyr on Track 4, led by AMTK 170, makes final preparations to depart east. The Zephyr just dropped off the Winter Park Express trainset, led by AMTK 142, sitting on Track 5. Once the Zephyr gets its mechanical release, it will pull away from the station, leaving the Winter Park Express equipment behind for the upcoming ski season. The temperature outside is a chilly 15°F (-10°C).
