A trio of elephant-style GEs and a couple dozen empty hoppers lead up the MNYRO on this morning. More than likely, the empty hoppers will be setup in Grand Junction and loaded on the North Fork Branch.

While I have heard that UP has been running more SD70ACes on coal trains, this is the first time I have actually seen it. A very shiny (compared to the rest of the power) SD70ACe leads up this coal empty at Leyden. The train is headed for the Energy mine on the Craig Branch.

While it is fairly common for UP's MNYRO to depart west just ahead of or just behind the Zephyr (assuming the Zephyr is running on time), it is a bit of a bonus to have an additional train. This coal empty came from Xcel Energy's Cherokee Power Plant in Denver and is headed for the loadout at Energy on the Craig Branch.

With the Denver skyline standing tall in the distance, the on-time westbound Zephyr passes by the east end of Leyden on a clear signal. On this particular morning, the Zephyr had a trio of P42DCs leading the train out of town.

As is often the case, the area along the front range of the Rockies in Colorado has been getting more snow after the new year than before. March is, in fact, the snowiest month in Colorado. Plenty of the white stuff remains from the blizzard two days earlier as the westbound Zephyr approaches the east switch of Leyden.

I enjoy this picture because it does a descent job of making Leyden look far more rural than it truly is. 50 years ago, Leyden was in the boonies! But now, Arvada has sprung up every which way around it. Regardless, this westbound UP manifest has a clear signal amongst the suburban development.

UP runs a daily train (except on Sundays) from North Yard in Denver to Roper in Salt Lake over the former Rio Grande. Traffic on the line certainly isn't what it used to be as Rio Grande had trains 81, 95 and 103 all making trips between the same two yards. Here, the MNYRO just knocked down the clear signal at east Leyden.

When I was a kid going out and taking pictures with my dad, I recall many a time setting up at this vantage point looking east straight down the rail. For over a decade, the shot had become impossible due to trees that had grown, obstructing the view. However, the owner of the key tree blocking the shot decided to cut it down, opening the view back up! Here, UP's MNYRO is approaching 80th Avenue and the east switch of Leyden.

24 hours earlier, the scene at East Leyden was very different as the snow had not yet started falling.

After a very, very dry winter along the Front Range, the snow is very much a welcome sight. The westbound Zephyr, running nearly an hour late, approaches the east switch at Leyden.

Thanks largely to stimulus money a few years ago, Amtrak was able to refurbish several of their P40DCs that had been in long-term storage. One such rebuilt unit (AMTK 815) made an appearance on the westbound Zephyr, seen here at Leyden.

This particular shot, looking straight down the main from east Leyden, hadn't been feasible for over a decade due to tree growth. However, the primary tree blocking the shot died and the owner cut it down, opening the view up again! The westbound Zephyr is just knocking down the clear signal.

Note "Kermit the Frog" strapped to the front of the Zephyr. Whenever this particular crew takes Amtrak west (Wednesdays and Saturdays), you can find Kermit on the point. It is an ongoing joke with the crew.

Spring has sprung along the front range of the Rockies in Colorado! Trees are starting to reclaim their leaves and the grass is turning a great shade of green. Meanwhile, the MNYRO enters the siding at Leyden to allow an on-time Zephyr to pass by on the main.

Brrr! An on-time Zephyr is running on clear signals as it enters the east end of Leyden on the main. The train is passing the MNYRO, which will depart right behind the Zephyr so both may continue heading west. The snow should help to get the foliage nice and green!

The lead unit on the MNYRO is so dirty that you can't even read the number on the cab! If you could, you see it is UP 5555 leading the 5,800-foot manifest in to the siding at Leyden. In a few minutes, the on-time Zephyr will overtake the train on the mainline.
