Just when you think Spring is really here in Colorado, Mother Nature likes to play an April Fools joke on you! Just 48 hours before this picture was taken (on April 1st), it was sunny and hot. And yet, April 3rd found this manifest making it's way through the snow in temperatures nearly 50 degrees cooler than two days earlier!

On what has to be the most beautiful morning thus far in the Spring of 2012, UP's MRONY is pulling out of the siding at Leyden after meeting the Zephyr and the MNYGJ. There isn't a cloud in the sky as the train approaching the Simms Street grade crossing. An SD9043MAC makes a somewhat rare appearance on the Moffat, third back in the consist.

On Sunday's, the MNYRO gets the day off! It is supplemented instead with an MNYGJ (running only to Grand Junction instead of all the way to Roper). While the Roper train can do setouts in Grand Junction, a lot of traffic is held for the MNYGJ. Here, a quartet of AC4400CWs (well, the lead unit is a C44AC-CTE) lead a lengthy MNYGJ toward the east switch of Leyden.

Yet another Zephyr with yet another typical consist. Why do I bother continuing to shoot identical-looking Zephyr's? Because today's typical becomes tomorrow's nostalgic! Did you know the F40PH was king of long distance Amtrak trains for about 25 years? Did you also know that the P42DC has now been around for 18 years!? What will the next chapter bring?

These days, it is rare to find anything other than GE AC's on the MNYRO or MRONY. So when I heard this SD70ACe was on the point of the MRONY, a picture was definitely in order. Here, said SD70ACe leads the train over Indiana Street toward the west switch of Leyden.

While not my personal favorite of Amtrak's scheme, I still prefer the Phase 4 scheme to the current Phase 5 scheme. Amtrak's Phase 4 Heritage Unit was leading the Zephyr west on the second day of Spring.

A nice treat to start off a Thursday. Other than the Phase 5 P42 second in the consist, this Zephyr has a matching set of Phase 4 equipment! The Phase 4 Heritage unit led the train west for this trip.

Union Pacific tracks and two trains...neither of which is Union Pacific! BNSF's westbound Lincoln-Provo manifest meets its counterpart at Leyden. After a day of maintenance and no trains, a few finally started rolling in the great evening light.

The westbound MNYRO with a pretty standard consist knocks down the east signal at Leyden. The MNYRO is consistently called around 5:00am and departs between 7:30am and 8:30am daily except on weekends. On Sunday's, an MNYGJ runs instead, also being called around the same time. On Saturday's, there is no westbound manifest out of North Yard.

A day earlier, the MNYRO was badly under-powered (only three engines) and had a hard time climbing up the hill. It seems the Denver power desk was aware of this and today the MNYRO had five units - three on the point and two on the rear.

After arriving in Denver an hour late, the Amtrak crews worked fast and got the Zephyr out of town only 15 minutes late. Here, the train is knocking down a clear signal at the east end of Leyden on its journey west. The signal here at east Leyden is one of only three sets of signals between Utah Junction and East Portal that have not been replaced by UP yet. The other two being Utah Junction itself (on the signal bridge) and the intermediates at Kipling. The intermediate's days are numbered too as a new signal is already in place once the new two main track project is completed.

Although you'd never know it just from this picture, the lead unit on the this coal load used to look very different. Until May 7, 2006, this was SP 354. On this day, it is leading this coal load east past the derail at Leyden...the train was too long to clear the west switch without pulling past the derail!

After meeting the MNYRO (which you can just barely see at the left side of the picture), this eastbound coal train is slowly pulling in to the clear toward a red signal at the east end of the siding.

The early morning sun really made this picture scream "black and white". The MNYRO enters the main at Leyden on an Approach (yellow) signal. The train will hold at the west end to wait for an eastbound coal load just coming around Big Ten Curve at the time this picture was taken.
