It is after 8pm and we are getting close to the longest day of the year (in the Denver area, anyway) as the westbound North Yard to Roper manifest knocks down the signal at the west end of Leyden. Getting the north side of a train lit here at West Leyden is possible between (roughly) April 10th and August 20th. The rest of the year, the sun is too far to the south to light the scene.

Less than five minutes before the sun would dip behind the mountains to the west, the westbound MNYRO approaches a clear signal at West Leyden. The train has a trio of brand new SD70ACe-T4s on the head end. These units are compliant with the EPA's Tier-4 standards for emissions. It has taken EMD several years to develop these units!

A new radio pole popped up at West Leyden and the intermediate at milepost 14.5 this week. The new pole is the one that appears to be coming out of the "Leyden" control box. I am guessing these poles relate to PTC as UP works to implement PTC on its mainlines.

Taking advantage of the overcast skies, I shot the eastbound Zephyr from the north side of the tracks at West Leyden. Prior to this winter storm, it had been 39 days since the Denver-Metro area got more than a "trace" of snow. We've seen temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s (°F) in February! A little snow and a high of 36°F is a welcome change.

An eastbound coal train crosses over Indiana Street in Arvada as the train approaches a clear signal at West Leyden. This train is headed for the Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver. With only one generator still burning coal, this "Public Service" coal train is running increasingly less. And, by the end of 2017, that last coal generator will be powered down and the plant will burn natural gas exclusively, spelling the end of this coal train...and possibly all coal traffic on the Craig Branch.

A westbound copper train, which consists of gondolas loaded with dirt which contains copper tailings, heads west out of Leyden. Despite the relative short length of the trains, they are heavy. Even with five units, this train will not be able to make more than about 15 MPH up the 2% grade of the Moffat.

A westbound BNSF copper train roles west at the west switch of Leyden. An ES44C4 and a C44-9W bring up the rear of the Provo-bound train on an unseasonably warm February day. Under partly cloud skies, the temperature is 64°F!

This shot seemed really appropriate on this day in particular. Why? Took this pictures 28 years (to the day) since the merger of Rio Grande and Southern Pacific. The merger went through on October 13, 1988. 28 years later and the bridge over Indiana Street in western Arvada still has "Rio Grande" painted on it. And mostly likely will until this bridge is eventually replaced when Indiana Street is widened to four lanes. No specific plans for doing so exist at the time of the picture. Oh, and there is a nice ballast train rolling east in to Leyden in the shot, too!

SP 355, disguised as UP 6248, brings up the tail end of this eastbound manifest. It is rather impressive that, nearly 20 years after the UP/SP merger, there are still several patched Espee units roaming the rails. Obviously their paint has seen better days, but you cannot completely write off the scarlet and gray quite yet!

Another leased unit returns to Denver from Grand Junction. After so many units (including leasers) have been moved from Denver to Grand Junction, it was interesting to see this GP38-2 on its way back. Whatever the reason, I always enjoying seeing one of these blue units.

UP has been sending a lot of older power to Grand Junction for storage, so it was interesting to see this HLCX GP38-2 coming back to Denver. Perhaps Denver needs a few extra units for switching...

The eastbound Roper, UT to North Yard, CO manifest (MRONY) take the siding at Leyden. The train will be meeting the westbound California Zephyr, which is running about 30 minutes behind schedule this morning. Four of the seven units on the point were online. The last three units were DIC (Dead In Consist) and were being moved from Grand Junction to Denver.

After getting a few shots of the West Local at East Leyden, a track inspector with track and time briefly stopped the local at West Leyden and gave me enough time to get over to the bridge over Indiana Street. A trio of GP40-2s take a single tank car west. So why so much power for a single car? On other days of the week, this same power is used on the South Local. That local usually has decent tonnage and merits the three units. Rather than break up the units when the West Local runs, it is easier to simply keep them together.

The westbound Zephyr moves through the west end of Leyden on a clear February morning. And while Amtrak does fill up a lot of the frame, take a second look at the picture. Do you see the second train? UP's MNYRO is off in the distance, moving west on the main at Eisele (formerly Clay) about a third of the way down from the top of the frame.

Two words: Tonnage reduction! In the past, BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest almost always has at least one DPU on the rear end. Not today though. The three units on the point are more than enough to handle the 30 tank cars, covered hopper, and box car on this train. Fewer trains and shorter trains on the Moffat...
