An eastbound "Snow Bus" special knocks down a clear signal in Barbara's Gulch. The City of Arvada annexed some land on the south side of the rails in order for the community of Leyden Rock to be built. Since the creation of new roads in the neighborhood, it allows for perspectives in Barbara's Gulch that were previously extremely difficult to get to.

At the start of the winter season, Colorado's snowpack was around 75% of the average. Since then, enough snow has fallen that the snowpack is now up to 150% of average! With all that snow in the high country, roads have seens a lot of delays or outright closures. In order to get crews to and from trains in the Colorado high country, UP uses a "Snow Bus". This is typically a caboose sandwiched by two units. On this particularly day, there are three units on this Snow Bus, which is headed back toward North Yard.

On an absolutely beautiful September evening, the eastbound California Zephyr glides east through Barbara's Gulch east of Rocky. The valley is rich with color, highlighted by the last afternoon light of the setting sun.

I missed the era when C30-7s rang dominant on many railroads. At least, I missed that era as far as photography goes. I still remember train chasing with my dad. I'd have to say that the C44-9W was the replacement for the C30-7, as far as its popularity goes, with railroads in the 1990s and early 2000s. While that era is also on its way out, you can still find plenty of "Crash-9s", as they are sometimes (unaffectionately) referred to, on BNSF trains.

An SD70M (with flared radiators) and an ES44AC bring up the rear of this westbound manifest as it rolls through Barbara's Gulch toward Rocky. The backlighting (which I'm typically not a fan of) certainly brings out the color of the September foliage.

For a long period of time, it was very unusual to find EMD power on UP mainline trains in Colorado. That trend has changed quite a bit over the course of the last few years. While GEs are still prevalent on most trains, it is certainly possible to find a train with all-EMD power. Case in point is the pair of SD70ACes and SD70M that lead up this westbound manifest in Barbara's Gulch. The DPU keeps the train from being exclusively EMD as an SD70M and ES44AC work to push on the back.

I always enjoy trying to find new locations to shoot...and this particular spot is a great one save for one thing. Barbara's Gulch has a large number of power lines running in and around it and, as you can see, one set runs right through the middle of this perspective. Regardless, I still thought shot was worth posting. An eastbound coal load rolls east out of Rocky with Tunnel 1 and east end of Plain visible in the distance.

At the west end of Barbara's Gulch, the westbound Zephyr pokes through the trees on its journey west. The lighting is harsh as it is very backlit. I was standing in this spot not primarily for this shot, but for the shot behind me of a meet at Rocky.

A fairly wet Spring has resulted in the plants in the Denver area greening up quite nicely. A special consist of six units and a passenger car head west (away from the photographer) on their journey toward Tabernash on the west slope. A couple days testing will ensue for the two new SD70ACe-T4s in the consist.

One of the 518 SD70ACes that UP purchased over about a ten year period is in full dynamics as it heads west (upgrade) in Barbara's Gulch. It is in full dynamics because EMD is testing brand new SD70ACe-T4s and, by putting the other units in the consist in full dynamics, it generates drag that helps simulate a train.

In order to test the loading and emissions for the SD70ACe-T4, EMD needs it to throttle up. Without an actual train to pull, the best way to do that is to take a couple of other units and put them in full dynamics while climbing a grade. Simulates pulling a train. Interestingly, a GE ET44AC (GE's own Tier-4 compliant unit) will be helping in this test.

Afternoon thunderstorms offer some interesting lighting and dramatic clouds as an EMD special heads west through Barbara's Gulch toward Rocky. Maintenance is in the process of clearing up between Rocky and Eisele, so the train will have an approach (yellow) signal at the east end of Rocky.

UP 8739 leads the SDVTNT-24 (Special, Denver to Tabernash) through Barbara's Gulch. The consist will tie down overnight on the wye at Tabernash. The crew will stay at a local hotel and be on duty at 0700 the next morning for testing.
