In fact, I would say that tank cars are likely the most common type of car found on the Moffat these days. Obviously coal hoppers would have been the obvious choice a few years ago, but the coal drought continues into 2017. The deciduous trees showing off their sticks. UP's MRONY rolls east through Barbara's Gulch. The bridge in the distance is CO-93. The temperature is unseasonably warm at nearly 60°F. When this happens in the Denver-Metro area in winter, it typically means you can expect very high winds. Today is no exception, which resulted in a 10 MPH slow order around Big Ten Loop. The 7,000-foot train is just starting to pick up a little speed after clearing the restriction. In addition to the two heritage units and new baggage car, the Zephyr has seven Superliners. Specifically, a Transition Sleeper, two standard Sleepers, a Dining car, a Lounge car, and two Coaches. In Spring and Fall, it is common to find eight Superliners (one more Coach) on the train. In the Summer, it is common to find nine Superliners (two more Coaches). Last week, AMTK 42 (Veteran's Unit) and AMTK 156 (Phase I) were on the Zephyr last Wednesday. On this morning, AMTK 822 (Phase III) and AMTK 184 (Phase IV) rolled through. The City of Arvada annexed some land on the south side of the rails in order for the community of Leyden Rock to be built. Since the creation of new roads in the neighborhood, it allows for perspectives in Barbara's Gulch that were previously extremely difficult to get to. Since then, enough snow has fallen that the snowpack is now up to 150% of average! With all that snow in the high country, roads have seens a lot of delays or outright closures. In order to get crews to and from trains in the Colorado high country, UP uses a "Snow Bus". This is typically a caboose sandwiched by two units. At least, I missed that era as far as photography goes. I still remember train chasing with my dad. I'd have to say that the C44-9W was the replacement for the C30-7, as far as its popularity goes, with railroads in the 1990s and early 2000s. While that era is also on its way out, you can still find plenty of "Crash-9s", as they are sometimes (unaffectionately) referred to, on BNSF trains.
