On a beautiful September afternoon, a UP manifest heads west down the main at Leyden. This manifest is one that doesn't show up on the Moffat too often. Rather than running to Roper, UT (the MNYRO) or even to Grand Junction, CO (the MNYGJ), this manifest is headed for the Craig Branch! It will terminate at the yard in Phippsburg, CO (the MNYPHX).

For a long period of time, it was very unusual to find EMD power on UP mainline trains in Colorado. That trend has changed quite a bit over the course of the last few years. While GEs are still prevalent on most trains, it is certainly possible to find a train with all-EMD power. Case in point is the pair of SD70ACes and SD70M that lead up this westbound manifest in Barbara's Gulch. The DPU keeps the train from being exclusively EMD as an SD70M and ES44AC work to push on the back.

An SD70M (with flared radiators) and an ES44AC bring up the rear of this westbound manifest as it rolls through Barbara's Gulch toward Rocky. The backlighting (which I'm typically not a fan of) certainly brings out the color of the September foliage.

A westbound manifest weaves its way through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek. The Phippsburg-bound "P-burg Local" sports a trio of EMDs, painting holding up nicely on all three. If you look toward the top-left of the shot, note the Denver skyline, roughly 20 miles off to the east.

A slightly different perspective of a westbound that just passed the hotbox detector at MP 22.6. Love the view of the Plains off to the east. In fact, if you look just above the radiators of the third unit, you can see the grain elevator located at the north end of North Yard (by the storage yard). On the left side of the frame above the lead unit, you can also see the tower that stands west of Leyden.

The lighting here, just west of the Blue Mountain grade crossing, is a little rough for the long hoods on the power. Still, a cool perspective looking back over this westbound manifest, so I thought it was worth posting.

Two DPUs on the tail end of a westbound manifest work hard to push a heavy westbound manifest (consisting of a lot of ballast) up the hill toward Plain. The units are dwarfed by the mountains that lead back into Coal Creek Canyon.

A westbound manifest climbs its way up the 2% grade and disappears in to Tunnel 1. The two units seen on the train are actually the DPU units on the tail end of the train. DPUs on manifests are essentially the norm on the Moffat nowadays.

An SD70M and an ES44AC bring up the tail end of a manifest that is headed for Phippsburg, CO on the Craig Branch. Visible in the shot is the east portal of Tunnel 1. The train will pass through this and another 26 tunnels before reaching the Moffat Tunnel, roughly 26 (rail) miles ahead.

The nose of an ES44AC is about to disappear in to the east end of Tunnel 1 as it pushes on a westbound manifest. The perspective of the shot makes it appear that the tracks are closer to the left tunnel wall, but they are in fact centered through the tunnel.
