A trio of elephant-style GEs leads a westbound Denver-Provo through Little Ten Loop and toward the west switch of Rocky. The train, as is the case with a majority of BNSF's manifest on the Moffat, is primarily comprised of tank cars.

CSX 3278 is leading a westbound coal empty toward a clear signal at the west end of Rocky. The train will run around a freshly maintained Big Ten Curve (fresh rails, ties, and ballast) before continuing west through Eisele and into the siding at Plain. There, the Zephyr will run around the train.

Despite the fact that the Moffat is back open after an eight day closure last week, there is still a lot of maintenance going on! The westbound Zephyr is being held in Denver until 12:30pm. Departing ahead of the Zephyr was this coal empty with an all-CSX consist. Note the incredible amount of equipment that UP is working on putting away in the house track, off the siding.

Hmmm...east meets west? An eastbound BNSF manifest offers up plenty of bell and whistle as it approaches a highrailer holding the siding at Rocky.

Pulling through Little Ten Curve, the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Blue circus train slows as it approaches a red signal on the siding at the east end of Rocky. The train will wait here for the westbound California Zephyr, currently about ten minutes to the east on the approach to Leyden.

Cars driving along on CO-93 are oblivious to the approaching UP Engineering Special. Although it is hard to tell from this vantage point, the train is entirely obscured from the drivers as it is well below them. The track rising on the hill toward the cars is the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead.

This consist is headed for Tabernash where, over the course of a few days, the train will make several round trips between Tabernash and East Portal. This will allow EMD to test the performace of their new SD70ACe-T4 both in high altitudes, and in tunnels. The UP units will be onhand to offer assistance, should it be needed.

A westbound special, consisting of six units (including two SD70ACe-T4 prototypes) and an EMD test car make their way west on the main at Rocky. Meanwhile, the weather is a little crazy on the plains, with moisture spilling out of the clouds between the location of the train and Standley Lake.

An eastbound BNSF manifest approaches as it descends down the main track at Rocky. I like this picture not only for the approaching train, but for the components in the foreground. As you can see by the sign to the right, westbound trains change radio channels at this location, and also change dispatchers. From the sign west (all the way to Glenwood Springs), DS-82 controls the railroad. East of this sign, it is DS-86.

BNSF has had trackage rights on the Moffat for over 18 years. They were granted the rights by the Surface Transportation Board as a part of the condition of the UP/SP merger. They run at least one train each way, each day. The eastbound train, which originates in Provo, UT, frequently descends toward Denver in late morning or early afternoon. Such is the case on this day as the train, composed primarily of tanks, heads east at Rocky.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Norfolk Southern, BNSF
Only 120 standard cab SD70s were produced, most of which went to (and are still with) Norfolk Southern. They look very similar to SD60s. They do use HTCR trucks instead of HTC/HTC-R trucks and the frame is an inch or two higher. Under the hood, they offer 4000 HP instead of the 3800 HP from an SD60.
