With elephants no longer a part of the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey circus, the circus train is now once again running over the Moffat (rather than through Wyoming) when moving between Denver and Salt Lake City. Such was the case on this morning as the circus is coming to Denver!

On a beautiful, crystal clear Colorado morning, the eastbound circus train descends down the main at Plain on its way into Denver. UP found some very nice power for the "Blue Train" for its trip from Salt Lake City (where the show closed two days earlier) to Denver (where the show opens the in two days).

The Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey circus still moves from city-to-city by rail. It is by far the most efficient way to move such a large operation. The circus actually has two shows running somewhere in the United States at any one time. As a result, the circus actually has two complete train sets. One is referred to as the "Red Train" and one is referred to as the "Blue Train". This is the Blue Train, and an example coach car on it. Performers essentially live on the train through the 11 month tour season.

The coach cars making up the circus train make a silver streak in the morning sunlight on the main at Eisele. The circus train is the longest private passenger train in the United States, coming in at 60 cars! It is over half a mile long.

A trio of newer GE units (an ET44AC surrounded on either side by an ES44AC) leads the circus train east out the east end of Eisele. The train is curving from the south to the east as it heads toward Big Ten Curve. Shortly, the train will be on the lower track (moving from left to right), on the approach to Rocky.

A long lens shot from CO-72 finds the circus train rounding Big Ten Curve as it descends toward Rocky. A lot of foliage has grown around (and in) the hoppers that sit on the inside of the curve up on Big Ten.

Pulling through Little Ten Curve, the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Blue circus train slows as it approaches a red signal on the siding at the east end of Rocky. The train will wait here for the westbound California Zephyr, currently about ten minutes to the east on the approach to Leyden.

Moving along at track speed, the circus train heads into the rising sun on the main at Leyden. UP found some very nice power to put on the train for the journey east from Salt Lake City to Denver.

This shot of the circus train really exemplifies just how long the train is. All of the performers and animals, as well as all of the equipment (sound, lighting, gear, etc) travels by train from city to city. For well over a decade, the circus always comes to Denver right around the first week of October. This year is no exception.

Many sunflowers are losing their petals as we approach the end of September. A couple still look mighty fine at Leyden as the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey circus train passes by in the background.

The circus train, which hasn't run on the Moffat in a decade, returned to the Moffat in 2016! Earlier in the year, the Red Train ran west over the Moffat on its way from Colorado Springs, CO to Las Vegas, NV. Now, at the end of September, the Blue Train heads in to Denver, getting ready for patrons to come and enjoy the greatest show on Earth.
