The westbound Zephyr, running about 25 minutes late, passes through Tunnel 1 a little over 23 miles west of Denver Union Station. This first tunnel on the former Rio Grande is 366 feet long. As you can see, short enough for both ends of the Zephyr to be outside the tunnel.

A new housing subdivision, named Canyon Pines, is under construction near Tunnel 1 in western Arvada along the Moffat Tunnel Sub. This subdivision has been rumored for 20 years, but only recently started to come to fruition. An eastbound oil train descends down the 2% grade from Tunnel 1 as the intersection of Moffat Road and Canyon Pines Drive is in the foreground, the asphalt having been laid for the new roads.

A trio of GEs leads BNSF's Provo-Denver into Tunnel 1 just east of Plain. You can see all the earth churn in the background as part of the construction of the new housing development called Canyon Pines. No construction on houses has started just yet as the landscaping and roads are still under construction.

Just west of Tunnel 1, the Zephyr snakes through an S-Curve amidst a snowy Front Range. The Zephyr has a pretty typical consist this morning. Two P42DCs, a baggage car, and seven Superliners (a transition sleeper, two sleepers, a diner, a longue car, and two coaches).

There isn't a cloud in the sky on this chilly February morning as the westbound Zephyr, running about 30 minutes late, climbs toward Tunnel 1 in a snowy winter wonderland. The lack of cloud cover has resulted in a nose dive in temperature, with it only being 14°F (-10°C) outside. It would be hard to be the view looking out of the Zephyr then on a morning like this.

I caught wind of a possible Rocky Mountaineer movement westbound and was hoping to possibly catch the full trainset. As it turns out, I had to settle for just the pair of GP40-3s. Most likely, the crew is making a training run west to Glenwood Springs. Even though it was only the two units, it was different from something orange, yellow, or Amtrak!

This should have been yesterday's eastbound Zephyr arriving in Denver, but due to a number of factors, the train is running a massive 17 hours late as it emerges from Tunnel 1 with 50th Anniversary unit AMTK 161 leading!

As BNSF's Denver-Provo turns toward the east portal of Tunnel 1, note the line of asphalt near the top of the frame. This is part of the construction of the new Canyon Pines subdivision. The development covers 180 acres and, when finished, will have about 90 single-family homes running up and over the top of Tunnel 1.

The westbound Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 1 on a beautiful October morning. The Zephyr is a little more colorful this morning as the "Pepsi Can" P42DC, AMTK 160, is second out on the headend. The scenery is trying to help out as well as fall colors are reaching their peak here along the front range.

There are few scenes as beautiful as the one seen here, with a fresh layering of snow not only on the ground, but still in the trees, creating that powdered sugar look. A pair of P42DC, including AMTK 130 (Phase I heritage unit) keep the Zephyr rolling west on time just west of Tunnel 1.
