The Zephyr has a pretty typical consist this morning. Two P42DCs, a baggage car, and seven Superliners (a transition sleeper, two sleepers, a diner, a longue car, and two coaches). The lack of cloud cover has resulted in a nose dive in temperature, with it only being 14°F (-10°C) outside. It would be hard to be the view looking out of the Zephyr then on a morning like this. As it turns out, I had to settle for just the pair of GP40-3s. Most likely, the crew is making a training run west to Glenwood Springs. This is part of the construction of the new Canyon Pines subdivision. The development covers 180 acres and, when finished, will have about 90 single-family homes running up and over the top of Tunnel 1. AMTK 130, the Phase II heritage unit, is second up on the train today. February is generally the coldest month of the year in Colorado and this day is no exception as the temperature is only 2°F (-17°C)! If you look in the background, you might notice a bit of a gash in the hillside in the background. This is part of a new neighborhood, called Canyon Pines, that has just started construction. This coal train is a bit odd as it is only about half the length of a typical coal load. In addition, the third unit on the head end is an SD70M. DC units are pretty rare on coal loads these days.
