With the Zephyr's return to daily service, this is the first Tuesday since September 2020 that has had an eastbound Zephyr descending the front range in to Denver. On this Saturday afternoon, something unusual showed up in the form of a BNSF coal empty. Six SD70ACes lead the empty on the climb up from Coal Creek to Tunnel 1. Severe winter weather in the mid-west has been rough on Amtrak. Both the Zephyr and Southwest Chief from earlier this week were entirely canceled the weather was so bad! Second out in the consist is UP 1996, the Espee Heritage Unit. Here, the train is emerging from Tunnel 1 in low afternoon light with a few coal hoppers at the front of the train. The previous Sunday and Monday brought a couple inches of snow an extreme cold temperatures. This morning is a crisp, clear morning. Not a sign of a cloud or, even better, any smoke in the area. The lead units is a recently-repainted ES44AC that is now sporting BNSF's 25th Anniversary paint scheme. The Denver-Provo will end up being one of only four trains to run on the Moffat today. If Amtrak does not back off its plan to reduce service, then the Zephyr is going to go from a daily train to a thrice-weekly train starting in about two weeks. Two weeks before the end of summer and the westbound Zephyr makes its way west through a few inches of snow after a very early winter storm the day before. The Zephyr is just about on time as today it is running as Train #1105 (instead of Train #5). It departed Denver two hours later than normal to accommodate UP maintenance. Leave it Colorado to come up with crazy weather. In a 16 hour period earlier this week, the temperature dropped from 95°F to 32°F. Several inches of snow fell when there are still nearly two weeks left in summer. Not even fall yet and you get a unique scene like this. The train is a welcome site to the Moffat, which has is low on traffic and high on repetitiveness lately. The train came to Denver from North Platte, NE overnight, and is heading west as far as Helper, UT today. The exact nature of the trip is unknown.
