The Zephyr climbs west out of Tunnel 1 and toward the east switch of Plain. The Zephyr has seven Superliners on it today, which has become the normal since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. At least, for now, Amtrak is still running.

The Zephyr passes through the first of many tunnels both in the Tunnel District, and overall in Colorado and points west. Tunnel 1 is about 366 feet long, so the head end easily emerges out of the west portal while the tail end Superliners have yet to enter the east portal.

The Zephyr climbs its way up from the base of Coal Creek Canyon, getting ready to enter in to the east portal of Tunnel 1. You can see where CO-72 passes underneath the track and heads west up Coal Creek Canyon.

Just east of Plain, the Provo-Denver is on the approach to Tunnel 1 with six units on the head end. The train departed Provo at 5:20pm the previous evening, so it took about 16 hours to get here, and will take right around 17 hours to get in to Denver. Two crews (Provo to Grand Junction, Grand Junction to Denver) can pretty easily handle the train.

A single UP SD70M leads on of the shortest trains ever out of Tunnel 1. The unit in tow is an SC-44 "Charger", owned by the Washington Department of Transportation. That's Washington State, and this unit will be used in Amtrak Cascade service between Seattle, WA and Eugene, OR. It is currently headed to the Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo.

Emerging from Tunnel 1 to the west, the Zephyr continues its climb up the east slope of the Rockies up to the Moffat Tunnel. Just around the corner ahead of the Zephyr is a clear signal at the east switch of Plain.

The head end of the Zephyr is just about to duck in Tunnel 1, having gained a few hundred feet since crossing Blue Mountain Road just out of the frame to the left. CO-72 heads up Coal Creek Canyon to the top-right.

Interestingly, when David Moffat was building the line in 1902, one of the possible routes surveyors considered would have taken the tracks straight up Coal Creek Canyon, where CO-72 disappears in the background. This would have necessitated a long tunnel (to get from present day Crescent Village to Pinecliff). It was largely due to this the railroad opted to instead take the current alignment along the Front Range to South Boulder Creek.

After a minor delay at Rocky to meeting the MGJNY, the westbound Zephyr is back on the move just west of Tunnel 1, on the approach the East Plain. Colorado is currently in its peak "green" season, which tends to hit in May and June. Passengers in the seven Superliners are hopefully enjoying their journey up the Front Range.

The eastbound Zephyr glides toward the west portal of the final tunnel (Tunnel 1) on its journey east in Colorado. On this particular evening, AMTK 184, the Phase IV Heritage Unit, is on the point for trip to Chicago. In the distance toward the upper-left of the frame, you can see the City of Boulder.

It is a beautiful June morning as the eastbound Zephyr approaches the west portal of Tunnel 1. Normally, "beautiful morning" and "eastbound Zephyr" would not appear in the same sentence when talking about the Front Range in Colorado. However, yesterday's Zephyr is running almost 14 1/2 hours late! The train got hung up in Utah assisting yesterday's westbound Zephyr, which had a power failure.

The morning sun has crested the eastern horizon and is bathing the westbound Winter Park Express in brilliant light. The train is running right on time and should provide patrons with a full day of skiing at Winter Park. The train is climbing up from Coal Creek Canyon and is just about to duck in to Tunnel 1.

Safe journeys, #5! The tail end of the westbound Zephyr is about to disappear in to the east portal of Tunnel One. Passengers are getting close to the start of the "Tunnel District", which really starts at Tunnel Two. Between there are Tunnel 29, its light and dark as the train passes in and out of 27 tunnels.

Quickly gaining altitude as it rises above the plains, the head end of the westbound Zephyr is about to disappear in to Tunnel One. This is the first of 28 tunnels the train will pass through in the next 15 miles on the way up to the Moffat Tunnel.

On the approach to the west portal of Tunnel One, UP's MGJNY finds some wonderful morning sunlight. UP only has three unit coal trains currently scheduled to run east in the entire month of January 2020! Lately, coal trains have been carved up some and placed on the MGJNY, rather than being run as unit trains.
