Emerging out the west end of Tunnel 1, a sole C44-9W brings up the tail end of the westbound Denver-Provo. The head end of the train is already through the S-Curve and on the main at Plain, approaching the grade crossing.

BNSF 6163 leads a pair of SD70ACes on the climb west up the grade from Coal Creek Canyon to the east portal of Tunnel 1. The lead units is a recently-repainted ES44AC that is now sporting BNSF's 25th Anniversary paint scheme. The Denver-Provo will end up being one of only four trains to run on the Moffat today. With Amtrak's move to thrice weekly on long distance trains, the Zephyr does not run on the Moffat at all on Mondays.

On the west side of Tunnel 1, an eastbound BNSF manifest (Provo-Denver) is descending down the grade out of Plain. Similar to UP, BNSF is running with a bit of coal toward the head end of the train.

The westbound Zephyr climbs up from Coal Creek Canyon toward the east portal of Tunnel 1. If Amtrak does not back off its plan to reduce service, then the Zephyr is going to go from a daily train to a thrice-weekly train starting in about two weeks. Time will tell if this is actually going to happen.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland...in summer! Two weeks before the end of summer and the westbound Zephyr makes its way west through a few inches of snow after a very early winter storm the day before. The Zephyr is just about on time as today it is running as Train #1105 (instead of Train #5). It departed Denver two hours later than normal to accommodate UP maintenance.

It is a chilly, snowy....summer day!? Leave it Colorado to come up with crazy weather. In a 16 hour period earlier this week, the temperature dropped from 95°F to 32°F. Several inches of snow fell when there are still nearly two weeks left in summer. Not even fall yet and you get a unique scene like this. AMTK 145, the Phase III Heritage Unit, leads the Zephyr west out of Tunnel 1 toward Plain.

It is hard to believe that it is still technically summer! Winter blew in quite early this year, as several inches of snow fell the day before. It is still a chilly, overcast scene today as AMTK 145 leads the Zephyr west out of Tunnel 1.

On a fairly overcast and somewhat gloomy Tuesday morning, a UP Officer's Special train heads west out of Tunnel 1. The train is a welcome site to the Moffat, which has is low on traffic and high on repetitiveness lately. The train came to Denver from North Platte, NE overnight, and is heading west as far as Helper, UT today. The exact nature of the trip is unknown.

The Zephyr climbs west out of Tunnel 1 and toward the east switch of Plain. The Zephyr has seven Superliners on it today, which has become the normal since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. At least, for now, Amtrak is still running.

The Zephyr passes through the first of many tunnels both in the Tunnel District, and overall in Colorado and points west. Tunnel 1 is about 366 feet long, so the head end easily emerges out of the west portal while the tail end Superliners have yet to enter the east portal.

Just east of Plain, the Provo-Denver is on the approach to Tunnel 1 with six units on the head end. The train departed Provo at 5:20pm the previous evening, so it took about 16 hours to get here, and will take right around 17 hours to get in to Denver. Two crews (Provo to Grand Junction, Grand Junction to Denver) can pretty easily handle the train.

A single UP SD70M leads on of the shortest trains ever out of Tunnel 1. The unit in tow is an SC-44 "Charger", owned by the Washington Department of Transportation. That's Washington State, and this unit will be used in Amtrak Cascade service between Seattle, WA and Eugene, OR. It is currently headed to the Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo.
