The Provo-Denver typically has 3-4 units, but today it had a bit of a bump with six units on the head end (and two more DPUs on the rear). The "green and cream" paint scheme is becoming less and less common, but one still shows up ever now and then!

The signal on the main at the east end of Plain is showing a clear (green) aspect for BNSF's Provo-Denver, which is currently at Tunnel 4. Early in the 21st Century, UP gave all control points a designation for use when issuing track and time, flagging past red signals, etc. The east switch of Plain is CP DS024. The "CP" is short for "Control Point". The "DS" designation comes from "Denver & Salt Lake". The "024" indicates this control point is near milepost 24.

Today's westbound Zephyr lost about 90 minutes in the Osceola, IA / Creston, IA area last night. It was able to make up some time between Fort Morgan and Denver and is now only about an hour late as it heads west on the main at Plain. For the first time (that I can recall) since the pandemic hit, the Zephyr has eight superliners, including three coaches! It has only been running with seven for quite some time. Astute observers will be able to spot the west portal of Tunnel 1 near the left side of the frame.

Highball Plain! After meeting an eastbound at Rocky and an eastbound at Eisele (Clay), the westbound Zephyr now has a clear shot west. In fact, the next eastbound it will see will be the eastbound Zephyr out near Glenwood Springs.

At first glance, this might look like a coal load coming out of Plain. But if you take another look, you'll notice some general manifest cars. This is the thrice-weekly MGJNY. As of this shot, it departs Grand Junction on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. That generally results in a morning arrival in to Denver.

The cold (and oftentimes snowy) weather of the Winter has given way to a fantastically green Spring as the westbound Zephyr heads west at Plain. May has brought above average rainfall to the Denver area, which in turn has really greened up the fields. The Zephyr has three Amtrak California Comet cars in tow. I happened to shoot these cars two weeks ago when they were coming east on the Zephyr.

The westbound Zephyr comes through the east control point at Plain with a trio of Amtrak California "Comment Cars" on the head end. The cars are returning to California after spending a few weeks away.

AMTK 156, which has been used on the Winter Park Express Ski Train all season long, was taken by the California Zephyr on this morning. The P42DC that had been leading the train from Chicago to Denver died! In need of a replacement, AMTK 156 was taken.

Winds are changing rapidly on this morning, blowing low-laying clouds in and out around the tracks at Plain. Two minutes before the Zephyr showed up, I couldn't see the trees on the far side of the tracks! But the wind actually blew out just enough of the clouds to create a great atmosphere for the on-time Zephyr.

Zephyr in the Mist! It was an interesting weather morning in the Denver-Metro area and along the Front Range as the westbound Zephyr moves in and out of low-laying clouds at the east end of Plain.

For this years Winter Park Express, Amtrak brought in one of their Heritage Units...specifically, the Phase 1 "Bloody Nose" unit sports a modern take on Amtrak's first paint scheme. Here, the train is highballing the east switch at Plain.

A pair of Amtrak's specially painted units lead the morning westbound Zephyr past a clear signal at the east switch of Plain. Love the advertisement for "Toys for Tots" on the nose of AMTK 42!
