In that storm, the fill between Tunnel 2 and Tunnel 3 completely washed out, shutting down the Moffat for roughly two weeks. Fast-forward to this day as a westbound coal empty crosses the fill, through the cut, and toward Tunnel 3. Like tens of thousands of trains before it, the westbound Zephyr passes over fills and through a cut on the approach to Tunnel 3. Right around 10 MPH (16 KPH). The train received a restricting signal at the west end of Plain and will continue at this speed until (at least) the east portal of Tunnel 10, the location of the next signal. The rest of the train stretches back and through Tunnels 3 and 4 (and beyond, out of view). The train originated in Yermo, CA and is ultimately headed for Fort Riley in Kansas. The tracks move (roughly) geographically north here, working their way from Coal Creek Canyon to South Boulder Canyon. At Tunnel 8, the tracks take a hard left and dive into the Rockies. The new Phase 7 scheme has become second place for me. Phase 7 unseated the original Phase 1 scheme from second place. I always enjoyed the Pointless Arrow in particular.
