At the end of the California Zephyr, seven GrandLuxe Rail Journey cars are being pulled along to form the GrandLuxe Limited. The cars look pretty good on the outside, and passengers on the inside are no doubt enjoying them too!

Wrapping around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, the cut does a nice job splitting up Amtrak 5 (at the front of the train) and the GrandLuxe Limited (at the back of the train). The head end of this westbound train is now facing (compass) east...just part of the trip up the Front Range!

A shot of the seven GrandLuxe Rail Journey cars that were placed on the end of Amtrak 5 to form the "GrandLuxe Limited". The cars are about to cross over Highway 72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The building in the foreground is a Colorado Department of Transportation facility where they store salt/sand for the highway in the winter.

The TXI plant - located roughly halfway between CO-72 and the south end of Boulder along CO-93 - is the last industry served on the north end of the Rocky Spur. Anybody who's driven past on CO-93 will probably remember it! This shot shows the plant along with the new "critter" being used to switch cars out at the plant.

It appears as though the GM8 that has been used by the TXI plant (at the end of the Rocky Spur) for so many years may have finally fallen off its last leg. This new "critter" showed up a few weeks ago and has been switching hoppers that the GM8 used to switch.

At the very end of the Rocky Spur is the TXI Plant (that has gone through several different owners over the years). For as long as I can remember, the plant has switched out covered hoppers using this old G8. It is in pretty sad condition and may actually be inoperable at this point. It hadn't moved in several weeks at the time I took this shot. This is the VERY end of the Rocky Spur, just a few dozen feet away from CO-93.

The mountains right along the Front Range don't have a lot of deciduous trees that can offer good fall colors. However, there are a few hiding amongst the pine trees as seen here at the west switch of Clay. A coal empty with three units (no DPU) hustles west as the last of five westbounds to leave Denver before 11am!

Formerly known as the American Orient Express (and now the GrandLuxe Rail Express) heads west for the second (of seven) days spent along the rails between Denver and San Francisco. Unlike in 2005 (the last time the train ran west on the Moffat), this year the train is led by three (leased) P42's instead of just two.

At the east end of Cliff, the last DPU unit on a westbound coal train does a nice job catching the morning light. This westbound would untimately be tied down while waiting for an eastbound coal load in emergency just west of Cliff.

At the west end of Cliff, an eastbound coal load went into emergency and stopped right on the switch. The train had problems with the first (of three) swing units that took about three hours to correct!

Look west at the west end of Clay, you can see the gain in elevation between west Clay and east Plain. In this shot, the Ski Train is over a mile (trackwise) away, but has incurred a noticeable gain in elevation.

In the summer morning light, the Ski Train winds its way west on the mainline at Clay. From Highway 72, the tracks through Clay appear to be relatively straight. In reality, though, there are several curves as you head through the block.

The siding of Clay was originally named for the clay found in the area. The clay was a fire red color and, for awhile, the name of the siding was in fact Fireclay. The siding here at Clay has a permanent 12 MPH slow order on it and heavy loaded trains are not allowed through the siding. This is because the siding rests on the soft clay and the railroad doesn't want to risk a derailment.
