A similar scene was repeated for many, many years on the Rio Grande. UP E-Units crossing over Highway 72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon bring back memories of Rio Grande F-Units leading freight (in the 50's and 60's) and then passenger trains (until 1983) over this same track. Here, an OLS Special is climbing toward Tunnel One. This is only the second time UP's E-Units have visited the former Rio Grande through the Rockies (not around them).

E-Unit in your face! Say hello to UP 951, one of three remaining active E9's on UP's Roster (or, Heritage Roster, to be more specific) at the time of the photo. Headed west toward the Craig Branch, the Heritage Equipment is being used on Operation Lifesaver Specials in Colorado lately. The next stop is Steamboat Springs.

Making their second appearance ever on the Moffat, UP's three E-units (951, 963B, and 949) lead a six-car Operation Lifesaver train westbound through Barbara's Gulch just east of Rocky. The train will run up the Craig Branch to Steamboat Springs, similar to the trip the Ski Train (or part of the Ski Train) made in June 2006.

With clear signals ahead, passengers enjoy the view off the open vestibule of the Kansas. The Ski Train is heading west at a quarter to four in the afternoon on a special chartered run. The train will return to Denver later the evening, arriving around 11pm.

Don't you just feel a little refreshed after this shot? Half way through the siding at Cliff, the tracks cross over South Boulder Creek on this wooden trestle. The Kansas crosses the quick-moving water as it continues its journey west.

It is a perfect summer morning in Colorado as the Ski Train heads west at Coal Creek Canyon. Note the Bike Car added in behind the power. What more needs to be said about this one!

Moving opposite of the Colorado River, UP 5710 leads a coal load from the mines at Somerset east through Byers Canyon. This train will stop at the west switch of Granby while it waits for maintenance crews between Tabernash and Winter Park. Dispatch 82 will even tell the crew that they can go into town and grab a drink if they'd like one as it will be a little while!

Just above the loops at Crater, this westbound coal empty is making its way toward the Crater siding. It is a light Sunday on the Craig branch and this train will have no meets at Crater, Volcano, or Toponas. A clear shot into Phippsburg.

Even though the dispatcher has told the MNYPV that they have a clear signal, the crew still head west slowly, assuming the signal at the west end of the siding may be red. The train had Amtrak pass on the main a few minutes ago, and with the passenger train in the clear, the MNYPV can head toward the snow-peaked mountains in the distance.

After letting Amtrak 5 pass on the main, UP's MNYPV (North Yard to Provo, Manifest) gets its turn to charge west. On this day, the train was relatively short and being led by three SD70M's.

It isn't very often that things get this green in Colorado. The green season typically lasts for a few weeks in May (maybe June), but things get brown pretty fast as summers tend to be dry. However, things were looking good on this day as BNSF's Denver to Provo (MDVPVJ) heads west through Clay.

Every once in a while, Amtrak ends up running more than just a little bit behind schedule. The eastbound California Zephyr was just such an example on this particular day. Amtrak 6 wraps through the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon about twelve hours late! It's not too often you can get Amtrak 6 coming down the Front Range in morning light!

Passengers aboard Amtrak 5 enjoy the view (well, for what it is worth at this particular location!) from the Lounge car as the train heads west on Main 3 toward C&S Junction and the far-more-scenic Moffat Tunnel Sub.
