The MNYGJ on the main was originally set to go west at Leyden but DS-86 asked if they could stop before reaching the west signal at Leyden. The crew said they could and DS-86 took the signal down. Slide fences was the reason for doing so. Slide fences had DS-82's territory a bit messed up so a few eastbounds needed to run before the manifest could continue west.

At the west switch of Leyden, an eastbound (empty) ballast train enters the siding. It was so fantastic seeing a trio of SD70Ms...my personal favorite model EMD has released since the SD40-2. This particular ballast train came from the area around Tunnel, CO (near Grand Junction) and is headed for Cheyenne, probably for a refill!

At last! With this picture, I finally have a shot of all four Heritage Units leading the California Zephyr. As far as I'm concerned, I saved the best for last. The Phase III scheme has always been my favorite. The Zephyr charges west out of Leyden.

A single C44AC-CTE brings up the tail end of this coal empty which is headed for the North Fork branch out of Grand Junction. The colorful (fully flagged and winged) unit is the perfect way to wrap up a nice bit of shooting on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th.

Approaching the west switch at Leyden, this coal empty is making track speed at 35 MPH with its three units (the third being on the rear). This shot is relatively close to the location of the old west end of Leyden. It used to be a fairly short siding (under 5,000 feet) with the west end lining up with the cottonwood trees to the right. It was extended to its current 7,100 feet by Rio Grande in the early 1980's.

A single C44AC-CTE is found pushing on the tail end of MNYRO just west of Leyden. The train is crossing over Indiana Street as it quickly disappears into the morning fog.

Ouch! Talk about taking the scarlet and gray and patching it practically beyond recognition. In addition to the standard patch on the cab and the shield on the nose, note that "Union Pacific" has actually been placed on the long hood! The yellow frame stripe isn't helping out either.

With the California Zephyr now a few blocks ahead (after passing by on the main), the MNYRO now has a clear signal to depart the siding westbound. The fog has actually gotten thicker since the Zephyr passed by.

After passing by the MNYRO (which is sitting in the siding), the westbound Amtrak disappears back into the morning fog just as quickly as it emerged from it a few minutes earlier.

From out of the fog, the westbound California Zephyr run down the main past the waiting MNYRO. The dispatchers on the Moffat do a good job at keeping the Zephyr moving.

The westbound MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard to Roper) is stopped in the siding near the west end of Leyden. It is waiting for the westbound Zephyr, which is running on time this morning, to overtake it. It is a bit of a foggy morning out!

The westbound MNYRO made it a whole whopping 10 miles out of North Yard before being tied down in the siding at Leyden! There have been a lot of work windows on the Moffat lately during daylight hours. Once Amtrak comes through, the railroad more or less shuts down (for trains). The MNYRO was a little delayed getting out of the yard and thus had to spend the day at Leyden until the main was opened again in the evening. On this particular day, the train is over 6,000 feet long with 96 cars! There are two more units DPU'd on the tail end of the train.
