At the end of the California Zephyr, seven GrandLuxe Rail Journey cars are being pulled along to form the GrandLuxe Limited. The cars look pretty good on the outside, and passengers on the inside are no doubt enjoying them too!

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Amtrak
Wrapping around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, the cut does a nice job splitting up Amtrak 5 (at the front of the train) and the GrandLuxe Limited (at the back of the train). The head end of this westbound train is now facing (compass) east...just part of the trip up the Front Range!

A shot of the seven GrandLuxe Rail Journey cars that were placed on the end of Amtrak 5 to form the "GrandLuxe Limited". The cars are about to cross over Highway 72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The building in the foreground is a Colorado Department of Transportation facility where they store salt/sand for the highway in the winter.

A slightly different perspective of Coal Creek Canyon in this shot. The Summer Ski Train makes a 180 degree turn at the base of the canyon and is now heading east (geographically) as it climbs toward Tunnel 1. The Utah and Kansas cross over Highway 72 at the end of the train.

A similar scene was repeated for many, many years on the Rio Grande. UP E-Units crossing over Highway 72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon bring back memories of Rio Grande F-Units leading freight (in the 50's and 60's) and then passenger trains (until 1983) over this same track. Here, an OLS Special is climbing toward Tunnel One. This is only the second time UP's E-Units have visited the former Rio Grande through the Rockies (not around them).

It is a perfect summer morning in Colorado as the Ski Train heads west at Coal Creek Canyon. Note the Bike Car added in behind the power. What more needs to be said about this one!

Every once in a while, Amtrak ends up running more than just a little bit behind schedule. The eastbound California Zephyr was just such an example on this particular day. Amtrak 6 wraps through the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon about twelve hours late! It's not too often you can get Amtrak 6 coming down the Front Range in morning light!

I don't know about you, but I'm feeling a little chilly! Snow is coming down at a pretty good pace at the base of Coal Creek Canyon as the Ski Train crosses over Highway 72. The private cars on the end (California, Utah and Kansas) are empty today, but wouldn't you just love to be in the dome of the California for this trip!

The exhaust from the four active units on the train can be clearly seen against the bright western sky as we move closer and closer toward sunset.
