Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
Sometimes when you go after a train - even when things are setup just right - you can still manage to get burned! Case-in-point was this particular morning. Just west of Rollins, along East Portal Road, I had a descent lead on the Ski Train. Then, I come around a corner and see two cars both going 15 MPH (half the speed limit). With two cars on a dirt road like this, it isn't safe to pass...and they show no signs of pulling over. The Ski Train comes and blows past us! When I finally got around, I had no chance to catch back up. This was the only view of the Ski Train I got on this morning.

At the west end of East Portal - milepost 50 - the MNYRO-01 comes to a stop on the siding. It is waiting to meet an eastbound coal load that is about to enter the tunnel in Winter Park.

About 25 seconds after I snapped this picture, the clouds (of course) parted and a wonderful ray of sun splashed all over this spot. However, even without the light, this ES44AC looks pretty good on the point of the MNYPV. Following the new GEVO is an SD70ACe and an AC6000CW...an impressive power lineup.

On the last official day of summer, the aspen trees above 9,000 feet - at the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel - are at their absolutely peak as far as their fall colors go. The power here is the end DPU power on a westbound coal empty plunging into the Moffat Tunnel.

A nice looking C44AC-CTE leads a coal empty past trees that are nearing their fall color peaks. Another week to 10 days for some of them, while others are right at their peak. The train is a few hundred feet away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel.

UP 8487 leads the westbound MNYPV as it is about to enter the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The train is passing under a brand new camera tower that has been placed about 100 feet east of the east portal. There are at least five cameras on the new tower pointing in various directions.

Winter lighting can sure play havoc with a photographer! The sun was far enough around the mountain to the south to illuminate the hill in the distance, but not quite far enough to the west yet to actually light the tracks. In any case, Amtrak 5 disappears into the 6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel.

The Ski Train blasts out of the Moffat Tunnel right on time at 4:30pm on a Saturday afternoon. The Ski Train has been making some very good time between Denver and Winter Park lately, often getting to its destination early!

The sun shines through to light up the nose on this westbound BNSF manifest as it prepares to enter the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Back in 1997, Santa Fe's Warbonnets were still in close-to-pristine condition and you can tell even in this black and white photo!

Espee 131 is about to overtake ATSF 845 at the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The light power will run through the tunnel ahead of the manifest to rescue a stalled coal load at Winter Park. This picture was taken on Ilford Pan-F (ISO 50) film.

A BNSF manifest holds the siding at East Portal to allow light power to run around the train on the mainline. A westbound coal load stalled out on the main at Winter Park and this light power was sent through the tunnel to rescue it!
