As soon as they emerge from Byers Canyon, westbound trains can immediately start accelerating. Freight trains can speed up to 60 MPH, while passenger trains such as the Zephyr are able to move up to 70 MPH. This stretch of track between Byers Canyon and Kremmling is the fastest the Zephyr goes between Denver and Glenwood Springs.

Two veterans of the original California Zephyr roll by on the end of the modern California Zephyr. The first car is the Silver Rapids. The second car is the Silver Solarium, and it was owned by the CB&Q and made the journey on the end of the train many, many, times!

The eastbound Zephyr has left 70 MPH track behind and is now slowing as it approaches a sharp curve at the west entrance to Byers Canyon. Due to the sudden speed change, UP has a detector set than, when an eastbound is detected, an automated voice comes on the radio reminding the train that they are approaching 20 MPH track.

This westbound coal empty just passed a clear signal after previously having a restricting signal in Byers Canyon. that means he can let off the brake a bit and start to accelerate back up to track speed. Here, the train passes a grade crossing that leads to a shooting range in the summer months.

A good roster shot of a brand new (less than a month old) ET44AH. It is sometimes easy to forget just how sharp a freshly painted unit looks, especially when you are used to seeing 15-20 years old power, covered in coal, dust, dirt, oil, and grime! Note the interesting antennas on the top of UP 2696. I can only assume that these are somehow related to PTC (Positive Train Control), but I am not certain.

After winding its way through Byers Canyon, this UP passenger special will now start accelerating toward the maximum track speed of 70 MPH! At this point in the journey, several UP vice presidents are sitting in the first dome car. Soon, they will move to the second dome car to enjoy dinner.

Perhaps you have seen buses in your town that have ads plastered on the side of them? Well, Amtrak has a Superliner with a similar ad for Cable Cars in San Francisco. Apparently, the car spent much of last year running on the Coast Starlight and has now moved to the California Zephyr.

The westbound California Zephyr has just exited from the west end of Byers Canyon. The engineer is now throttling up as track speed has increased from 20 MPH to 70 MPH! Despite Amtrak receiving a huge number of new baggage cars at the end of 2014, the new cars still haven't made an appearance on the Zephyr.

This is a fairly typical consist for the Zephyr these days. Two P42DCs, a baggage car and eight Superliners. Depending on the numbers of bookings, the only real variance is that the Zephyr may have only seven Superliners or may in fact have nine.

After meeting the eastbound MRONY at Flat, the westbound Zephyr has a clear signal out the west end. The DPU on the end of the MRONY can be seen here as the manifest starts to pull east.

Four years ago, the MNYRO and MRONY almost always had SD70Ms for power. However, the economic downturn of late has resulted in a lot of AC power available. UP typically runs AC power on the MNYRO, shuttling several units to Glenwood Springs where they will be used as mid-train swing helpers.

After pulling a string of covered hoppers from TXI Aggregates, the West Local backs across Colorado Highway 93 on its way back down to the mainline at Rocky. The last unit in the consist in a former Rio Grande GP40-2!

Looks somebody has spent some time to try to "unpatch" this former Espee GP40M-2! You can clearly see the outline of a UP shield that has been painted over on the nose!!

The Rocky Local (now referred to as the West Local) makes a rare Saturday appearance on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. The local is switching out hoppers at the TXI Aggregate plant, about four miles north of the Moffat mainline.

In between Flat and Kremmling, Amtrak can really move along. There are places where track speed allows Amtrak to reach 79 MPH! This picture was taken from my passenger window (while Damian was driving) on US-40 parallel to the tracks, just west of Flat.
