The last shot of the Big Boy steam excursion for 2025 would come here, at the bridge over the South Platte River between La Salle and Greeley in northern Colorado. The lighting was beautiful and the smoke from UP 4014 was pumping out nicely as the train continued on its journey north back to Cheyenne.

UP 4014 is kicking up just a little bit of smoke as the train charges south on the main track just north of Platteville. The train is making track speed down the Greeley Sub, usually 50-60 MPH in most locations.

There is a very decent curve just north of Platteville where the tracks curve around from a southwest heading to a southern heading (for southbounds). UP 4014 and train are rounding that curve here, coming up on a clear (green) signal at the north end of Platteville.

The high summer sun breaks through the clouds at UP 4014 and UP 1616 lead a passenger excursion across the South Platte River in between the towns of Evans, CO and LaSalle, CO. A wave of cars is soon to show up on southbound US-85, chasing after the steam engine.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is in the process of building a new overpass across US-85 and UP's Greeley Sub to eliminate an at grade intersection between Country Road 44 and US-85, and a grade crossing for County Road 44. The bridge over US-85 has been complete. However, as you can clearly see, the new overpass crossing the tracks has not yet be built. The project is slated to be completely in late 2023. Will the remaining two months of the year be enough time to complete it?

A few miles south of La Salle, a northbound UP baretable intermodal train flies by the Peckham Feed shop. A single AC4400CW leads the long, empty train.

If you are familiar with the California Zephyr and Colorado, that still may not help you in trying to determine the location of this shot! The Zephyr is just north of La Salle on UP's Greeley Sub. The train is detouring through Wyoming due to the closure of UP's Glenwood Springs Sub.

Despite the "nose only a mother could love", I have to admit that the SD70ACe is really starting to grow on me. It'll never replace such units as the SD40-2 or even the SD70M, but it not too shabby!

Talk about quick turnaround! Although you can't tell from the pictures alone, these two units are the same two I shot at dawn at Henderson. Apparently, the power was serviced quickly and kicked right back out of town!

It is late afternoon as this southbound (empty) rail train sits in the siding at La Salle. The train has already met one northbound and will have to wait for two more before continuing south.

This is my favorite picture of the day! A pair of AC4400CW's lead up a northbound manifest on the approach to La Salle. In this 300mm shot, the 14,259-foot-tall Longs Peak stands tall in the distance.

At the south end of La Salle, a coal empty headed for the North Fork Branch continues on a clear signal. The Greeley Sub is one spot where you can see coal empties meeting each other and/or coal loads meeting each other! Powder River Trains and Colorado Coal trains can meet each other from time to time.

Now here is a unit that you definitely do not see every day. This is one of only three remaining GP40P-2's! Three of these units were delivered to Southern Pacific for use in the San Francisco area. The extended section at the back contained a steam generator. Of course, that equipment has long since been removed, but the unusual body still exists.

This is a picture that had to come sooner or later. It is very likely that this will be the last picture I ever post on my website (in the 21st Century anyway) of an unpatched Rio Grande unit on a mainline (instead of in a museum). DRGW 5371 heads north on the MNYNP-08 to Cheyenne, where it will presumably be retired....farewell old friend!

At the south switch of La Salle, the northbound MNYNP-08 has a clear signal as it continues to charge north toward Cheyenne. Once in Cheyenne, the sixth unit (DRGW 5371) will be set out, presumably so it can be officially retired. Where it goes from there, nobody but UP is certain for now!
