A cloudy, drizzly October day in Colorado finds three private cars bringing up the rear of Amtrak. From front to back they are Mesa Verde, the Pacific Union and the Cimarron River.

Fall colors are starting to slip into trees in the Denver-Metro area as the westbound California Zephyr charges west just west of Leyden. If you look closely, note three private cars hanging out on the tail end of Amtrak.

After meeting the Rocky Local at Rocky, this eastbound BNSF trackage rights train (the QSTDVJ) with a Retro-Belle KCS leader has an approaching diverging (yellow-over-yellow) signal on the approach to Leyden. There, the train will meet a few westbounds before heading into town.

Kansas City Southern's Retro-Belle scheme was popular with fans from the moment it was released. It is based on an old scheme KCS used in the 1950s called the Southern Belle. Here, KCS 4116 is being leased by BNSF and is leading the Stockton to Denver manifest down the Front Range, over the Moffat.

This is a view that has the potential to change drastically in the next ten years or so. A new highway could be built across the tracks somewhere in this shot. Whether it will come to pass remains to be seen!

A quintet of SD70's (an SD70ACe and four SD70MACs) lead up this BNSF coal empty which is headed west on the Moffat. Roughly once each month, BNSF runs this 75-car coal train west to load on the Utah Railway at the Wildcat Mine near Helper, UT. The train typically makes an early, pre-dawn departure from Denver. On this day, however, it was an mid-morning departure, allowing for some pictures.

Roughly once per month, BNSF takes advantage of their trackage rights on the Moffat and runs a coal train west toward Utah. The train is actually jointly operated, being run by BNSF up the Joint Line and west on the Moffat to Grand Junction where it is turned over to Utah Railway. A Utah Railway crew takes the train to Utah Railway Junction (near Helper) where the train is then taken on Utah Railway tracks past Martin up to the Wildcat mine. After loading, the train returns east.

This light power move is hot on the heals of a westbound BNSF manifest, so the train paused at a red intermediate at MP 14.5. With the signal now yellow (an Approach aspect), the unit throttle up and start accelerating. These 12 units make four sets of three swing helpers. The units will be placed in Glenwood and cut into eastbound coal loads coming out of Grand Junction.

14 miles west of Denver and the westbound California Zephyr is climbing out of the city in between Leyden and Rocky. The Denver skyline rises above some morning haze in the distance.

Running on clear signals, the MRONY-26 heads east with four SD70Ms and a C44AC-CTE on the point. At 102 cars and just over 5,800 feet in length, this is a long Roper to North Yard manifest! Most of the train consisted of covered hoppers.

Rather rough lighting makes this shot a bit rough to see. A 6,000 foot eastbound BNSF manifest approaches Leyden with seven units on the point, including a Canadian National C40-8M.

Hey, I do believe there is a Zebra in that pumpkin patch! A very rare visitor to Colorado to be sure, CN 2417 is the sixth of seven units on this BNSF trackage rights train. The unit is a C40-8M, a "cowl" unit produced by GE for Canadian National specifically.

Very turbulent weather across Colorado, including (unfortunately) a deadly tornado in the Greeley area, led to some interesting cloud patterns. A former Chicago & North Western AC4400CW (ex-CNW 8804) leads a westbound coal empty west of Leyden.

It is not at all uncommon to see shots taken near the intermediates west of Leyden. I decided for a slightly different perspective on this day and went about a half mile east of the intermediates to get the MNYRO-21 charging west out of Leyden. The train consisted of 74 cars and seemed to be giving the four units on the point a pretty good workout.

A barge in the Mississippi slammed into a BNSF bridge in Iowa on Thursday, shutting down the bridge. Unfortunately, this is the same bridge that the California Zephyr uses to cross the Mississippi! Consequently, the Zephyr had to take a very long reroute. Here, the westbound Zephyr is running nearly nine hours late as it heads west of Leyden in late afternoon light.
