Increasingly, UP is running manifest on the Moffat with DPUs. This Sunday was no exception as a sole C44AC-CTE brings up the rear of the eastbound Roper to Moffat manifest.

The third train of the morning on the Moffat and not one of them has been a coal train! The eastbound MRONY-25 is heading for the west switch of Leyden. It will run through the siding and continue on to North Yard.

After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, this eastbound coal load is now headed east on an extremely windy morning. Gusts of wind were exceeding 60 MPH!

As the Zephyr heads west, you can see the Denver skyline in the distance. If you look closely, you can also see the Arvada water tower a bit below the skyline.

The kids' grandparents decided to take a trip to Glenwood Springs on Amtrak. After dropping them off at the station, the girls and I chased the Zephyr west. Here is the first shot along CO-72 just west of Leyden.

Back in April, the Zephyr came through Denver a couple times with AMTK 66 - the Phase II Heritage Unit - as the second unit on the train. However, it was nice to see the unit on the point of the Zephyr on this particular morning. The train is only a few minutes late as it charges west out of Leyden.

This is pretty much the definition of a perfect morning in Colorado (at least in my book)! Clear blue skies and temperatures right around 60ºF. A very long MRONY has an approach diverging (yellow-over-yellow) signal at Chemical. The train will be taking the siding at Leyden to meet its counterpart. These manifests used to be a good source for DC power (SD70Ms, SD60Ms, C44-9Ws, etc), but these days, they seem to almost always just carry the same AC power that coal trains have.

Unlike all the previous Heritage schemes, the Phase IV scheme was first worn by the P42's, so this scheme wasn't tweaked much from when the P42's previously wore the scheme. However, the gray above the red and white lines is in fact darker than when the P42's wore the scheme a decade ago.

With this shot, I have now managed to shoot three of the four Amtrak 40th Anniversary Heritage Units. This is the Phase IV unit, which was never one of my favorite schemes. But, any of the previous schemes is better than the current scheme, in my opinion!

Weather conditions in Denver were very interesting on the morning of September 16th. As you can see, the city was pretty well fogged in, but as you gained a little elevation to the west, you escaped the fog. Here, the Zephyr is running on clear signals above the fog level, the top of Denver's skyline just clearing the fog.

Running about an hour late, the eastbound California Zephyr is moving at track speed between Rocky and Leyden. The train has nine Superliners, which isn't too uncommon during summer months when passenger traffic is a bit busier.

The Zephyr heads west through a cloud of snow about 14 miles west of Denver. Quite a different scene from 48 hours earlier, at this same location, when the sun was shining and the ground was dry.

The first snow of the winter season (that resulted in any accumulation) hit on Veteran's Day! And on this day, the California Zephyr is running about 20 minutes late as it charges west through the white stuff just west of Leyden.

Despite the fantastic sunshine right now, those dark looking clouds indicate the future of the weather in the metro area! The first snow fall of the 2010-2011 winter season in Denver would come later in the afternoon. The westbound Zephyr will get to the snow a lot sooner though as it journeys west.

It is right around 8:30am and the Zephyr is running right on time this morning as it heads west out of Leyden in the early sunlight. The Zephyr has its standard trio of coaches, sightseer lounge, diner and pair of sleepers.
