How many trains do you see in this picture? If your first reaction is "only one", look again! As a coal empty approaches the intermediate signal below Rocky, the MNYGJ proceeds west (geographically north) on the mainline at Clay way off in the distance.

It has been a busy morning on the Moffat and this is the fourth train to leave Denver in the past two hours! This particular coal empty went into to North Yard instead of running through one of the bypass tracks. This was likely done either because it was having power issues or the power arrangement needed to be changed. The train started in Cook, IL and is headed for the Bowie Mine on the North Fork Branch.

I love spending time in the rural high country of Colorado. You get a very relaxed feeling as you pass places like the Egeria Park Roping Club in Routt County outside Toponas. UP 7084 and train are doing that exact thing on this Sunday morning.

About ten miles east of Phippsburg, this coal load is pulling hard up the 1.8% grade on the climb to Toponas. After reaching Toponas, it is a relatively steep descent down to Bond, with the grade getting reaching 2.36%.

While I try not to include an excess of roster shots, Dark Future CSX SD70MAC's aren't exactly common place in Colorado! This happens to be my favorite phase of the SD70M(AC) too - the Phase 2 - which has the slightly flared radiators.

In between Leyden and Rocky, a very tardy MRONY heads toward town. The train got held at Crescent for nearly 12 hours due to mud slides and a derailment in the Tunnel District between Plain and Crescent. In this shot, the crew on the train has about an hour left to work.

It's twenty minutes past sunset and overcast as BNSF's Denver to Provo trackage rights train heads west out of town. Considering I didn't have a tripod with me, I was pretty pleased with the way this extreme low light shot turned out! What do you think?

After completing their work at Chem Spur, the West Local has no cars to take west to Rocky. However, the light power will head up there to switch some hoppers around on the Rocky Spur.

Can't go wrong with that light package! True, the MARS light is missing, but the class lights are still in place. The brakeman heads toward the derail to realign it after the light power is back on the main.

After completing their switching, the West Local is coming back down off the Chem Spur to join up with the mainline. The rainy day was helpful in brining out the surrounding colors!

After completing the spotting of cars at Mesa Oil, the West Local - now consisting of light power - heads back toward the main. You can really see the grade on the spur, which the power is starting to descend down.

The West Local backs up on Chem Spur, spotting some cars at Mesa Oil. I took this shot to show the distance between the spur and the facility in the distance.

The West Local (formerly the Rocky Local) switches tank cars on Chem Spur at Mesa Oil. I've wanted to try to catch the local here for nearly ten years, so I was happy to finally get my day. Great power to boot.
