Got fog? The clouds were hanging very low to the ground on this April Sunday as an eastbound BNSF manifest rounds the corner near the west switch of Crescent. It was a wonderful surprise finding a Warbonnet on the point of the eastbound.

The dispatcher had a well-timed meet setup at Crescent between the eastbound BNSF manifest on the main and the westbound UP light power on the siding. It was interesting hearing both trains approaching, but not being able to see either until they were within a few hundred feet due to the fog.

11 light units proceed west on the siding at Crescent toward the west switch. By the time the light power gets there, the BNSF manifest heading east will be in the clear.

BNSF's eastbound Provo, UT to Denver, CO manifest wraps through the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. While you wouldn't guess it from the snow falling in this picture, it was actually only partly cloudy and dry just seven miles up the canyon at Crescent.

This was an extremely colorful consist and indeed a pleasure to shoot. Of the six units on the point, only three were orange. Two Warbonnets and a Dark Future CSX SD70MAC rounded out the power. I thought it somewhat ironic that the CSX unit was the only EMD unit as CSX has been almost exclusively a customer of GE since the 1980's.

While I try not to include an excess of roster shots, Dark Future CSX SD70MAC's aren't exactly common place in Colorado! This happens to be my favorite phase of the SD70M(AC) too - the Phase 2 - which has the slightly flared radiators.

A nice 300mm shot of a westbound coal empty. This train had to stop at Leyden for over an hour as the lead unit had an alarm and stopped loading. However, the help desk helped the crew get the problem resolved. Only the first three units on the train are loaded...the last five will be set out in Grand Junction as mid-train swing helpers.

An eastbound coal load approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain in very thick fog. Shooting trains in fog can always generate an interesting effect from the headlights. I thought the blues in this shot gave it a particularly cold feel, which I really liked.

This westbound coal empty is pulling into the siding at Plain to meet with a punctual California Zephyr. The Zephyr was close enough to Plain that the dispatcher had the coal empty pull all the way into the siding, temporarily blocking the grade crossing.

The eastbound California Zephyr emerges from the fog running on a clear signal through Plainview. The coal empty in the background got in the clear just in time for the Zephyr.
