One axiom on any railroad is "hurry up and wait". That was certainly proven to be true on this afternoon as this eastbound got stopped at the grade crossing at Plain for over an hour due to maintenance. Once maintenance had cleared, there was a new issue...the crew didn't have enough time left on the clock to get down to Rocky. So, they had to do the crew change at Plain. The crew took nearly two hours to get to Plain, and the eastbound Zephyr got stopped for 45 minutes around Tunnel 4 as a result.

Did you ever read the "Where's Waldo" books? Well, I suppose the title of this shot could be "Where's the Eastbound"! The westbound MNYGJ sits patiently in the siding at Plain awaiting an eastbound coal load. And, if you look closely, you'll see said eastbound emerging from Tunnel 4 in the distance near the right side of the shot.

In a pre-dawn derailment on the Moffat, this was the loaded hopper that was the culprit. A single axle popped off in the Tunnel District and it was tied down here until it can be inspected and taken back to town.

A westbound BNSF manifest holds off the grade crossing at Plain while waiting for an eastbound coal load. That coal load would end up derailing a single car back up at Tunnel 12 though. This BNSF manifest would ultimately back down in between switches at Clay and wait for a relief crew.

BNSF's Provo to Denver trackage rights train makes it was east at Plain. The train is just coming through the appropriately named Rainbow Cut. Two Spring snow storms in the last week have left a lot of snow hanging around on the ground.

Twelve units make their way west (geographically north) at Plain. The tracks, from left to right, are the main, the siding and the house track. Even though it is Spring, don't let that fool you in Colorado! March is the snowiest month for the Centennial state.

At east Plain, this westbound light power move enters the siding as a snow storm starts to move in from over the Rockies. The power will have to hold for a few hours at the west end of Plain for some maintenance, the Zephyr and a coal load.

At Plainview, a concrete tie train is tied down on the siding, waiting to continue west. The train is headed for Bond and will ultimately work in Gore Canyon, laying out its ties for the major tied / ballast / rail replacement project that has been ongoing between Gore and Bond this summer.

This is a site that I had never seen prior to this photo! Not one, but two DPUs on the tail end of a (UP) manifest on the Moffat. And, even more interestingly, the first unit is a "triclops" SD60M. The train was rather long at 103 cars.

UP 1989 has made a couple trips west to Grand Junction on the MNYRO in the last few weeks, typically returning to Denver a day or so later on the MRONY. Hopefully, considering the fact it is facing east, UP 1989 will return to Denver on the point of an eastbound.

It seems that the Denver Power Desk is finally trying to break UP 1989 out of its nocturnal ways! Here, UP 1989 is the fourth unit on the MNYRO. The good thing about this position is that it looks all set to lead a train back east after reaching Grand Junction.

Black and Orange running on the Moffat! Okay, so perhaps "Orange and Black" is a bit more accurate...two ES44ACs bring up the rear of a westbound UP coal empty headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. UP is borrowing some power from BNSF on this particular day.
