The sun was definitely working against me here, but after getting a shot of the MRONY about 20 minutes earlier, I couldn't pass up the chance to grab a picture of its counterpart! After meeting the MRONY at C&S Junction, the MNYRO departed westbound. Here, it just passed the detector at MP 8.4 and is headed through the cut in Arvada.

This is a shot that I have been hoping to shoot for quite some time. Not necessarily at this exact location...but I've wanted to get a shot of a silhouetted train, backdropped by either a rising or setting sun. Everything came together perfectly on this morning as this eastbound train head straight into yellow/orange painting at the detector at milepost 8.4 (near Carr Street).

It is a beautiful, sunny (albeit cold) afternoon in Byers Canyon. The 10º curves in the canyon make it possible to see the head end of the Zephyr from the Lounge Car.

This is a place I've wanted to shoot an eastbound from for quite some time. While I'm pleased with the outcome, I would now really like to shoot here in the morning when the fall colors are at their peak. This is about four miles west of Granby.

US-40 crosses over the tracks just east of Sulphur. This overpass is a great place to observe eastbounds as they charge up the 0.75% grade.

The MRONY is nearing the east end of Byers Canyon as the tracks get closer to the level of the Colorado River. The lead unit on the manifest, UP 6350, was SP 338 prior to the UP/SP merger.

With the sun now completely set, Byers Canyon makes for an interesting subject as a westbound coal empty winds its way through the ten-degree curves of on the canyon.

Union Pacific is in the process of adding a second main track between C&S Junction and CP DS007 (in Arvada). Consequently, UP has moved the high-wide detector previously found at MP 5.5 to MP 8.4, just west of Carr Street. It's the second time this particularly detector was moved. When UP built the Arvada siding, the high-wide was moved from MP 6.0 to MP 5.5.

The largest diesel locomotive ever built is accompanied by the Rio Grande Heritage Unit on an eastbound trip through Byers Canyon. The river is running high with snow run-off and heavy afternoon rains.

UP runs an annual Engineering Special that frequently seems to make its way over the Moffat! Such was the case here as the eastbound special, led by UP 6936, wraps its way through Byers Canyon.

The westbound California Zephyr is now the eastbound California Zephyr as it is being dragged back to Denver! Note the red class lights on AMTK 132, indicating this is the back of the train. The Zephyr has a double yellow in the distance at Arvada. It is lined down Main 3 and back into the station in Denver.

It is a beautiful June afternoon as a slightly tardy California Zephyr makes its way west a few miles west of Granby. The train is following the headwaters of the Colorado River. June may mean summer, but that doesn't mean you can't still find a lot of snow in the Rockies!

A quartet of C44-9Ws (and an ES44DC) head up the eastbound Stockton to Denver trackage rights train. The train has an Approach Diverging signal about a mile ahead of it. However, that would change to an Approach signal after dispatch called to ask if he could line the train down a different track.

What happens when the orange paint on a BNSF pumpkin sits out in the sun too long? It fades...and it fades a lot! A great example is the power on BNSF's Denver to Provo trackage rights train. The lead C44-9W is several shades lighter than the trailing two units.

The last shot of the day for this day! As I was headed for home with the kids, we were pacing the train, going about 30 miles per hour. I slowed the shutter a bit, held the camera up with one hand, pointed out the (open) passenger side window, and hopped for a good shot! This was the sharpest shots I got in which I had the entire unit.
