After a crystal clear day in the Denver area yesterday, today starts off a bit different as a layer of clouds blocks the sun on a somewhat chilly December morning.

The westbound Zephyr passes through Arvada, a suburb of northwest Denver. The train is approaching the grade crossing at Kipling Street and the intermediate signal at MP 9.8.

In between Arvada (the control point) and Leyden, the westbound Zephyr is running right on time on clear signals. If you looks closely, you will notice the very top of one of the skyscrapers in downtown Denver just over the tops of the tree lines toward the right side.

Making its way west of Byers Canyon, this train will soon be able to pick up some speed. Freights are limited to 20 MPH through the canyon due its tight curves, but the flat terrain between Byers Canyon and Kremmling allow for freights to move up to 60 MPH. The train cannot speed up just yet as its tail end is still in the canyon, as noted to the left side of the frame.

I was very grateful to find the end DPU on this eastbound coal train facing the "right way" as the train rounded the curve near MP 9. A fantastic mix of clouds and sun paint the background behind the lone remote unit.

The small cut in Arvada near milepost 9 is just high enough to keep the train in the shadows...until it rounds the curve at the east end of the cut! The three mid-train swing helpers and this coal load are rounding said curve, diving in to the bright morning light!

While the tops of the trees are illuminated by the rising sun, this eastbound isn't quite in the (direct) light yet as it rounds the curve near milepost 9, through the small cut in Arvada. The Colorado Rockies have had plenty of snow lately, as evidenced by the front of UP 5904.

Between Gore and Byers Canyons, trains can actually reach speeds of 60 MPH. This manifest is making good time in Parshall, CO, but will be slowing down shortly to 20 MPH in preparation of entering Byers Canyon.

This is a spot that I've wanted to shoot for awhile. It would have worked better if it was an hour or so later (as the cars on the train would have been lit). However, the spot at 66th Avenue in Arvada still looked quite nice!

After receiving a 90-day inspection at Burnham, UP 1364 is being shipped west to Grand Junction for yard and local work. This seems rather fitting, considering that until 2006, this was actually DRGW 3109! It was patched in 2006 and subsequently painted in early 2007. At that time, it made a trip to North Little Rock, AR. In addition to a fresh coat of paint, the GP40-2 had its MARS light removed and air conditioning added.

Can you identify this spot along the Moffat? If you said the 66th Avenue grade crossing in Arvada, you'd be correct! The MNYGJ is charging west as a trio of birds circles in the air in the distance.

Between Denver and Glenwood Springs, there is a section of track between Flat and Kremmling when the Zephyr actual reaches speeds of 70 MPH. Here, at Troublesome, the House Track is rejoining with the siding as we bolt by.

Four years ago, the MNYRO and MRONY almost always had SD70Ms for power. However, the economic downturn of late has resulted in a lot of AC power available. UP typically runs AC power on the MNYRO, shuttling several units to Glenwood Springs where they will be used as mid-train swing helpers.
