At the east switch of Rocky, a trio of BNSF units are in command of this westbound Denver to Provo trackage rights train. Meanwhile, a UP ballast train (symboled WDVDVB-23) sits tied down on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. The ballast train has been dropping new ballast along the main. In fact, a bit of new ballast is barely visible along the rails at the base of the hoppers.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
On a clear Colorado morning - well, clear to the east anyway - the Ski Train meets an eastbound coal load at Rocky. If you look closely, you can see the tail end of an eastbound MRONY holding the main at Clay!

Approach the east switch at Rocky, the westbound Ski Train has an Advanced Approach (high flashing yellow) signal. The train will be meeting an eastbound manifest (the MRONY-04) at Clay. The manifest is holding the main, but does not fit between switches. The Ski Train will run through the siding, waiting for the manifest to clear, and then continue west.

Light was very quickly fading from the sky as the Ski Train comes out the east end of Rocky. Those with a keen eye might note something different about the Ski Train on this evening...the private cars are at the front of the train! This would be because the train was unable to wye (turn around) at Tabernash. So, the power ran around the train and essentially ran down the mountain "backward".

A look down the long stretch of empty well cars on the rerouted baretable IOADVR. It took the train almost twelve hours to get from the Moffat Tunnel to Rocky! The primary reason was due to the MNYGJ, which broke a draw bar early in the morning. The other reason is that, well, baretables are just about the lowest priority train on the railroad! Note the last unit on an eastbound coal load coming through Clay is just barely visible in the upper left corner of the shot.

A very rare train was rerouted over the Moffat (whereas it would normally run through Wyoming). A baretable intermodal (the IOADVR) came from Oakland, CA running through the Utah desert and over the Moffat. Here, the train waits for the West Local while sitting in the hole at Rocky.

Something you don't see everyday (particularly on the Moffat)! Not only are these three BNSF ES44DC's just about as new as you can get, but they are also running in sequential numeric sequence (BNSF 7548, 7549, 7550). They are on the point of the MSTDVJ headed for Denver.

Four units lead the westbound MNYPH-10 headed west toward Phippsburg, CO. At Bond, this manifest (composed primarily of covered hoppers) will head up the Craig Branch, probably arriving at is destination in Phippsburg sometime tonight well after sunset.

Tunnel motor back on the Moffat!? Well, yes, although it is not quite wearing the proper colors…twenty years ago, who would have imaged a train on the Moffat that included a Kansas City Southern T-2 in the consist? Such was the case on this morning as the eastbound Provo to Denver heads east out of Rocky while a train they just met heads west around Big Ten in the background.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
For the first six runs of the 2006 season, the Ski Train did not have the typical sight of the Kansas bringing up the rear of the train. The Kansas was at Burnham being repainted. By January 14th, the paint job had been completed and the car was back in service looking very sharp!
