A westbound coal empty - the CCSSM-24 - is passing milepost 634 on UP's KP Line. The train is approaching the former (and possibly future) location of Sandown Junction. It was here that the Rock Island would leave the KP Line to head for the Belt Line and connect with DRGW.

At Ulster Street - also the former and possibly future location of Sandown Junction - this westbound coal empty has received word from 36th Street that the train can run around the wye at the yard and move toward the Belt Industrial Lead and the Bypass Track at North Yard.

Sometimes the rain can be a pain when you are working to get some pictures of trains. Sometimes, on the other hand, it can really work to your advantage! There have been quite a few afternoon thunderstorms in the Denver area the last week or two, and the water is building up in places. Such is the case just west of Ulster Street as this loaded coal train heads east (away from the camera) for the KP line.

On the approach to the Ulster Street grade crossing, the engineer on UP 900082 (the rotary snow plow) looks out the window to make sure the cross is clear.

CSX 50 is stopped at Ulster street, waiting for 36th street to grant permission for this coal empty to pass through the yard. It was quite a treat to find a train with pure CSX power, even if it was only two units!

MP 634 is near the location of what was once Stapleton International Airport. This coal empty is working its way west on the last four miles of its track warrant. It will wind up on "Bypass One" and cut Pecos Street near North Yard.

Back when the Rock Island was still in existance, the railroad had trackage rights on the UP from Limon, CO to Sandown Junction, just east of Denver. From there, The Rock would takes its own tracks to the Belt Line to interchange with the Rio Grande in North Yard. Today, all that remains of Sandown Junction is this sign just east of Ulster Street along the KP main. However, it is rumored that the line from the Belt to Sandown will rise again to carry coal traffic!
