When Amtrak returned to Union Station, it permanently moved from Track 1 to Track 4. The platform is very nice, with easy access to the Superliners (generally without a step stool).

My daughters have accompanied me trackside since they were babies. I feel very blessed that, at 11 and 8 (almost 12 and 9), they still enjoy hitting the tracks with dad from time to time. In fact, they are even starting to get into photography a bit themselves!

Over four hours late, the westbound Zephyr is preparing to depart Denver. Denver is a crew change point for Amtrak, meaning a new engineer and head-end conductor hop on for the journey west to Grand Junction (or, in the evening, east to Lincoln, NE on #6).

One of the Zephyr's Sleeping Car attendants looks out towards Union Station, the door shut and ready to depart. Parents with a young child stand by on the platform, ready to watch the Zephyr pull out when they get clearance from BNSF's 31st Street Yardmaster.

Amtrak's on train conductor walks the platform toward the rear of the train, making sure all cars ready to depart as an assistant conductor double checks his manifest.

After finishing up our pictures on the platform, my daughter Bella and I hop in the elevator to descend down to the bus platform and head back to the car, parked on Wewatta Street. The Zephyr has not yet gotten clearance to depart from BNSF's 31st Street Yardmaster.

Here is a shot that is drastically different from what you would have seen a few years earlier! Take a peek at the ninth picture that I added to my website, taken from close to the same perspective back in April 2002!

A good elevated look at the new Train Hall at Union Station, as well as a lot of the recent Urban development surrounding the station. A four hour late California Zephyr is pulling out of the station on Track 4, ready to head west. Note the private car parked at the tail end of Track 5 to the right of the Zephyr.

Transportation explosion! While it make not be passenger trains in the traditional sense, commuter trains will be coming to Union Station in 2016. The two tracks on the left side of this shot will be for the commuter rail that will run 23 miles east to Denver International Airport. The two tracks on the right side of the shot will run just over 11 miles northwest to Arvada and Wheat Ridge. The two tracks in the middle are for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak.

I really like this particular shot as I feel that there is a lot of great stuff captured in it. First off, of course, is the fact that Amtrak is still running (for the time being) in 2014! Coors Field, a year away from its 20th birthday, stands on the left side of the shot. 20th Street, which use to leave Denver on a raised viaduct, now descends underneath the tracks. And, of course, there is Denver's skyline in the background!

Leaving the urban scene behind, the westbound Zephyr is charging west (in and out of shadows) through Barbara's Gulch. It is a very dead Sunday on the Moffat and the four hour late Zephyr won't see another train until the west side of the Moffat Tunnel.

It is a beautiful August afternoon as the westbound Zephyr, with nine Superliners, decelerates as it approaches the west end of Barbara's Gulch. The track curvature is about to increase which mean train speeds must decrease.

As is rather common in the summer in Colorado, clear morning skies have given way to overcast and stormy afternoon conditions. There is a light rain at the west end of Rollins and a dime-sized hail storm between Rollins and Tolland. Neither of these facts slow down Amtrak, however, as it continues its journey west toward California.

The westbound Zephyr passes by the west end of Rollins on the main, heading for some inclement weather. Notice the whitish-hue in front of the mountains on the far right side of the picture (above Amtrak)? That isn't fog, that is hail!

Cast aside a little ways away from the tracks near the west end of East Portal, I found this milepost 50 sign just laying in the weeds. Apparently Union Pacific will be replacing it with a newer version!
