Both of these GP40-2s started out wearing scarlet and gray as Cotton Belt units! Now sporting their UP scheme (with CNW-inspired lightning bolt), they work on some switching on the west side of the yard in Grand Junction.

On a slow, partly cloudy Sunday morning, a Grand Junction crew uses a pair of GP40-2s to switch some cars around in the west end of the Grand Junction yard. A month ago, I happened to shoot this exact same GP40-2 (UP 1459) in North Yard in Denver!

The eastbound California Zephyr leave the main track (and the Green River Subdivision) behind as it enters the Depot Siding at Grand Junction. Currently stored alongside the main here is a string of switch engines (including several GP15-1s). If you closely, you'll also notice a pair of ACS-64s behind the head end power. These are new electric units (built by Siemens) being moved to the Northeast Corridor to replace AEM-7s.

The eastbound California Zephyr, running a little late, is pulling down the Depot Siding in Grand Junction, preparing for its scheduled station stop. You can see the Grand Junction depot in the distance.

Union Pacific currently has at least 20 units sitting in storage in Grand Junction. Most of them are old switchers, but there are a few former road units too. One such example is this C40-8, a veteran of the 1980s.

Despite its rather nice looking paint scheme, this GP15-1 is currently being stored in Grand Junction. Not sure what its fate holds.

This MP15DC started life wearing blue. Once a Missouri Pacific switcher, it is now sitting in storage in Grand Junction. I do not know if UP is waiting to sell (or scrap) this unit, or if it is just a temporary thing.

Amtrak has ordered a new fleet of ACS-64 electric locomotives from Siemens. The units will replace the aging AEM-7s and have already replaced the (relatively young) HHP-8s. Since these are manufactured in California, they travel from California to Chicago via the California Zephyr. From there, they will continue on to the Northeast to enter service.

If you live in Colorado, don't expect to see too many shots of an ACS-64! The only reason this one was possible was because the unit had just been manufactured and was on enroute to the Northeast Corridor where it will be used. If you live along the Northeast Corridor, you'll be getting used to these units very soon.

Amtrak has ordered 70 ACS-64 electric engines from Siemens for use along the Northeast Corridor. These units will replace the 52 AEM-7 (built by EMD) units and 15 HHP-8 (built by Bombardier) currently in use. The units will be numbered from 600-669.

I got this picture specifically for the beautiful mesas visible in the distance, west of Grand Junction. It is quite possibly the only time that such a shot will be possible with an ACS-64 (destined to run along the Northeast Corridor) in the foreground.

After a slight delay stopped at the depot in Grand Junction (due to a mechanical issue), the eastbound Zephyr is back on the roll in the town of Fruitvale just outside Grand Junction. The train has a fresh crew on board. Grand Junction is a crew change point for Amtrak. The eastbound Zephyr has a crew run it from Salt Lake City (home base) to Grand Junction (away base). Then, a new crew hops on to take the train from Grand Junction (away base) to Denver (home base).

A pair of brand new ACS-64 (built by Siemens) are being moved on the Zephyr from California to Chicago. There, another train will take the engines to the Northeast Corridor. The units feature cabs at both ends of the unit and are, of course, electric. You can see the pantographs (red) on the top which can be extended to connect to the catenary above the rails for power.
