A westbound double stack (with a single DPU on the tail end) rolls slowly west on Main 1. Note the headlight of a eastbound in the distance. That train had to stop after tripping a hotbox detector. The conductor had to walk the train and the westbound is rolling by slowly as a result.

An eastbound double stack pulls east on Main 2 just east of Pine Bluffs, NE on the Wyoming-Nebraska border. Seeing so little intermodal traffic in Colorado, it is always interesting coming up to the Overland and seeing almost nothing but intermodal trains. An afternoon storm is rolling in to the area from the west.

Intermodal trains continue to grow in length in order to move more goods with fewer overall trains. As a result, it is not at all uncommon to find mid-train swing helpers in double stacks. Case in point is this ES44AC!

About 35 minutes before the departure of Cheyenne Frontier Days finds an empty westbound rail train crossing over from Main 2 to Main 1 at CP W511. The train is passing underneath BNSF's Front Range Sub, which passes through Cheyenne on a north/south route.

A northbound BNSF coal empty headed for the Powder River Basin approaches Cheyenne as storm clouds to the east darken. The Canadian Pacific unit was an unexpected surprise!

After an on-time departure of 5pm at Cheyenne, the Cheyenne Frontier Days special rolls west, passing underneath the BNSF Front Range Sub (which has a coal empty currently sitting on it). The steam train is crossing over from Main 1 to Main 4 at CP W511 so it can proceed to Speer and then Denver on the Greeley Sub.

Highball Cheyenne! UP 844 leads the Cheyenne Frontier Days special on its return journey to Denver. An afternoon thunderstorm an a BNSF coal empty setup a wonderful shot at the crossovers at CP W511.

Pretty amazing to be able to witness a standard gauge steam engine operating in 2016! This UP 4-8-4 "Northern" class steam engine is almost 72 years old! Of those 72 years, the engine spent roughly 15 years in actual active service. It has spent the next 57 years in the excursion business.

After shooting Cheyenne Frontier Days at Nunn, it was impossible to get ahead of it again north of Greeley. However, the train made a stop in Greeley to check out 844 and make sure everything was running correctly. That stop allowed us to hop ahead of the train and setup for this shot of the train coming down the main in La Salle.

UP 844, UP 1989, and the Frontier Days train approach a clear signal at the south end of La Salle. After a brief stop in Greeley, the train won't be making any additional stops until it arrives at its station stop in Denver.

I don't always make it out to shoot the Cheyenne Frontier Days train. Ever wondered why? This shot might help to answer that question somewhat! As you can see, traffic builds up on US-85, parallel to the tracks. Some people enjoy pacing the steam engine (in both lanes), making it virtually impossible for those in back to get ahead to the next shot. Due to this frustration, I will either sit the day out, or plan out one or two spots I know I'll be able to get to!

After three years of being in the shops, UP 844 has nearly completed its first round trip back on the rails. A partial rainbow forms in the eastern sky as the train rolls down the Inbound Main at York Street, its final stop to let its passengers off less than a mile ahead.
