Both the engineer and conductor on the westbound Zephyr are very friendly and have a chat about the upcoming Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. They have a few more minutes to kill before it is time to highball Fraser and continue on the journey west to Grand Junction.

Two blasts on the horn of AMTK 184 inform the passengers on the platform at Fraser that it is time to board the train. The Zephyr will be headed west in about two minutes. In the distance, you can see the slopes at Winter Park, for which the Winter Park Express brought a train load of passengers up to.

Highball Fraser! With its station stop complete and all passengers back on board, the two P42DCs on the point of the California Zephyr throttle up and start pulling west.

The past meets the even-more-distant past! AMTK 184 is on the California Zephyr and wears the Phase 4 Heritage scheme. This is an adaptation of the relatively short-lived Phase 4 paint scheme that Amtrak used for about six years between 1999 and 2005. AMTK 156 wears the Phase 1 Heritage scheme. This is an adaptation of the "Bloody Nose" or "Pointless Arrow" scheme. This was the first official scheme that Amtrak had, and was used for about ten years, from 1971 to 1981.

A coal load that came off the Craig Branch (from the Energy Mine) earlier this morning sits patiently at Tabernash. It has been waiting here for over an hour, waiting for the Winter Park Express to run around its train and for the California Zephyr. The Zephyr just came through the siding, and the coal load will soon get a signal to continue east.

The westbound Zephyr slows as it approaches the depot at Granby. Unlike the station stop at Fraser, which is about 10 minutes and gives passengers a chance to step off the train, the stop in Granby is much shorter. Just long enough to let passengers off that are staying and let passengers on that are coming!

AMTK 184 leads the westbound Zephyr past the "Granby, CO" station sign that Amtrak has put up along the platform. The engineer gives a friendly wave out the front window of the cab.

Although the skies are mostly overcast, a brief break allowed for some great sunlight on the westbound Zephyr as it cruises along west of Granby! AMTK 184, the Phase 4 Heritage Unit, leads the way.

The California Zephyr rolls through scenic Byers Canyon at 25 MPH. There are multiple slide fences throughout Byers Canyon. These fences protected the tracks from falling rocks. And, if a large rock breaks one of the wires, the dispatcher is notified and signals around the break drop to restricting.

The westbound Zephyr snakes through Byers Canyon along the (rather frozen) headwaters of the Colorado River. The train will follow the Colorado River for the next 150 miles or so!

After a great chase from Fraser, it is here, just east of Troublesome, that we will part ways with the westbound Zephyr. It is meeting a coal load at Kremmling and I'll be chasing that back toward Granby.

An unusual coal load leaves the east end of Troublesome on a clear signal. Why is it unusual? It is only about 4,000 feet long and has no mid-train DPUs! Instead, it is configured with two units on the point and two unit on the rear.

On a mostly overcast day, a little bit of sun sneaks through the clouds on the tracks at Parshall. This stretch of track is in an open space in the mountains and offers a much higher maximum track speed for trains. Some freight trains reach 60 MPH and passenger trains reach 70 MPH.

I think I could spend an entire day in Byers Canyon, just looking for different angle to shoot trains as they roll through. This eastbound load is only going about 15 MPH as it last had an approach signal. It'll be stopping for maintenance briefly at the west switch of Sulphur.
