The westbound Zephyr is only about five minutes late as it pulls towards the platform at Fraser. A UP track patrolman in a hyrailer heads east on the siding at Fraser, meeting the Zephyr.

A typical Zephyr consist slows to a stop at the platform in Fraser for a brief station stop. Regardless of the number of passenger getting on or off, the train stops for about ten minutes to give passengers a chance to smoke on the platform (as the train itself is strictly no smoking). In the distance, most of the Winter Park ski resort has shut down for the season.

The westbound Zephyr has a clear signal at the east switch of Tabernash. The ski season is coming to an end at the Winter Park resort off in the distance. A portion of the result, known as Mary Jane, will remain open for another week.

A Denver and Salt Lake crane sits in the house track at Granby. Just a stones throw away from this spot is the future home of the "Moffat Museum". This crane will be moved over to the museum at some point in the future. It was brought to Granby from Denver about two weeks ago on April 14, 2018.

The westbound Zephyr rolls to its second stop west of Denver at Granby. This is typically a very brief stop as only a handful of passengers (if that many) get on or off.

The westbound Zephyr is stopped at Granby so two passengers can get onboard. The consist of the Zephyr is pretty typical for the Spring. There is a transition sleeper (for the crew), two sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and three coaches on the tail end.

A favorite location of mine on the west slope of the Moffat is just west of Granby. The lighting is not ideal for the westbound Zephyr, but it could be worse. It offers a nice view of the train in front of the Continental Divide in the distance.

Just west of the west switch of Sulphur, the Zephyr glides down the grade and in to Byers Canyon. The train had been going around 55 MPH since Granby, but had to slow down to 25 MPH through the canyon. On the opposite side, the Zephyr will be able to accelerate back up to 70 MPH!

Byers Canyon is not only a beautiful canyon to travel through, but it is also one of the few canyon through which the tracks and a road both travel! With the rails on the north side of the Colorado River, US-40 follows along on the south side of the river. Here, the Zephyr is seen from the slightly higher angle of the highway.

As soon as they emerge from Byers Canyon, westbound trains can immediately start accelerating. Freight trains can speed up to 60 MPH, while passenger trains such as the Zephyr are able to move up to 70 MPH. This stretch of track between Byers Canyon and Kremmling is the fastest the Zephyr goes between Denver and Glenwood Springs.

Looking through the lens of a 400mm lens, we see the Westbound Zephyr as it departs the west end of Azure (note the signal to the right). This stretch of track is between Gore Canyon and Little Gore Canyon. The tracks curve back and forth as they follow the Colorado River.

Not far west of Azure, the Zephyr makes its way west on the single track mainline of the Moffat. In the background is the west switch of the siding of Azure. The siding is not used super often as it is under 5,000 feet in length.

While Gore Canyon is all but inaccessible (other than by rail), the rails become visible at the west end of Gore Canyon from County 1 Road (Trough Road) on the south side of the Colorado River. There are multiple places where you can stop and get some nice shots of the tracks, such as this one west of Azure.

The Westbound Zephyr has just passed the hotbox detector and MP 113.2 and is now about to duck in to Tunnel 39. This particular perspective requires a little bit of hiking down to an overlook from Trough Road. Not a bad hike at all...less than five minutes. And well worth it, I might add!
