Just north of the small town of Nunn, NS 4004 and UP 7331 have 112 empty covered hoppers on the roll northbound. Not too far ahead and the dispatcher would give the train a high wind warning, with wind speeds up to 70 MPH reported. The empty trains "blow over" speed is 78 MPH, meaning the train will be able to continue to Cheyenne.

A southbound manifest knocked down the signal at the north end of Carr and enters in to the siding to meet a northbound empty grain train. The crew on the manifest will ask the crew on the grain empty to let them know when their last car is clear of the grade crossing. The crew on the manifest is calculating their train length as they believe there is a discrepancy from their train manifest. Their suspicion was correct, as the manifest showed 4,600 feet and the actually length was 5,700 feet. Turns out the discrepancy was due to a technology error with their (electric) manifest. A quick call with UP support got everything straightened out.

Starting in 1997, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) passed regulations on exhaust emissions for diesel locomotives. Five tiers (Tier 0 through Tier 2) were identified, with each higher tier having a requirement for cleaner emissions. Tier 0 applied to locomotives built between 1973 and 1992. Tier 1 applied to locomotives built between 1993 and 2004. Tier 2, which was the first real major decrease in emissions, went in to effect for locomotives built in and after 2005.

In 2008, the EPA added Tier 3 and Tier 4 requirements. Tier 3 applied to units built between 2012 and 2014, with Tier 4 starting in 2015. The Tier 4 standard required an 89% reduction in nitrogen oxides and a 93% reduction in hydrocarbons compared to Tier 0 standards. Compared to Tier 3 standards, nitrogen oxides required a 74% reduction and hydrocarbon required a 77% reduction

It took both GE and EMD years to develop locomotives capable of meeting the regulations. The designed were complicated and the units were expensive. In the case of EMD, they could no longer use a two-stroke engine, and instead had to move to a four-stroke (12-cylinder) engine, similar to GE.

Now, in 2023, UP still only has 87 SD70ACe-T4s (the Tier 4 compliant unit from EMD) on the roster. Most railroads have instead chosen to rebuild older units as rebuilds have lower emissions requirements and are far cheaper. One of the 87 SD70ACe-T4s is seen here, third unit at Carr on this southbound manifest.

UP's Greeley Sub has a large number of industries that are served in most of the towns the line passes through. The town of Eaton is no exception, as you can see the various industries lined up along the mainline as a southbound manifest rolls on clear (green) signals through the middle of town.

At the north switch of Greeley, a southbound manifest takes the siding to meet a northbound local, holding the main. The conductor for the local is on the ground in order to give the manifest a "roll by", checking for any possible problems with the cars. The manifest will be meeting two northbounds here at Greeley.

An interesting northbound highballs a green signal at the south end of Greeley. The train is interesting for a few reason. First, sole SD70ACe on the point is in fact the only unit on the entire train. Second, other than the first seven cars, the remainder of the train is all empty auto racks.

A string of empty auto racks rolls by on the main track at Greeley, passing by a now-defunct fruit business that has a now-defunct track in front of it that was once used for loading and/or unloading box cars. If you look closely, you'll notice the left rail is flat out broken. This track no longer connects to the mainline at either end, never to be used again.

A southbound UP manifest crosses the South Platte river just south of the town of Evans and just north of the town of La Salle. US-85 parallels the tracks, crossing the river over its own bridge. The South Platte is one of the largest rivers in Colorado, which isn't saying much when compared to rivers like the Mississippi!

Roster shot of SD70ACe-T4, UP 3087. I try to get a few shots of these units whenever I see them as they are relatively rare. Out of UP's roster of over 8,000 locomotives, they only have 87 of these EMD Tier 4 units.

As we enter in to the Golden Hour, UP 9013 rounds the curve just north of Platteville, taking the tracks from a southwest direction to a south direction on the journey south toward Denver. The conspicuous road sign along US-85 indicate the road will be curving, following the tracks to the north.

You couldn't ask for better lighting for these three units than the Golden Hour light here. The units are on the point of a southbound manifest, approach a clear (green) signal at the north end of Platteville.

About 20 minutes before the sun will disappear behind the mountains to the west, UP 9013 leads a manifest south toward Denver on the Greeley Sub. A few miles to the south, the train will be taking the siding at Brighton. But for now, it is running on clear (green) signals and moving at track speed.
