The westbound Zephyr has seven Superliners right now, most likely due to an increase in demand with holiday travels upon us. The train is just about to enter Little Ten Curve, approaching the old west end of Rocky, before it was lengthened around 1990.

For you modelers out there, there is a radio tower near the west end of Eisele (Clay) along the right-of-way. The westbound Zephyr rolls by right on time on its journey west.

It is 28°F as the on-time westbound Zephyr approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of East Portal. Snow is covering the landscape and will likely remain in many places now until next spring.

As we approach the shortest day of the year, the sun has moved far to the south. Consequently, half the valley the Moffat Tunnel is located in is now cast in day-long shadows. The rails the Zephyr is located on here will not see sunlight again until spring.

The westbound Zephyr is approaching a clear (green) signal at the west end of East Portal. For many decades, trains could not get a signal more favorable that an approach (yellow) going in to the tunnel. However, when UP replaced the signals on the Moffat, a change was made and clear (green) signals are now available heading in to the 6.2 mile-long tunnel.
