The morning Zephyr is rolling west through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain Drive, running right on time. There are two private cars on the end of the train that were added during the station stop in Denver. Picking up or dropping off private cars can often lead to a delay in departure, but not this morning!

A pair of Patrick Henry private cars (the Evelyn A. Henry and Warren R. Henry) are bringing up the tail end of the westbound Zephyr this morning. These are probably the two most common private cars to appear on the Zephyr in recent years. Amtrak greatly increased their fees for hauling private cars, and imposed many restrictions on where they could be picked up or dropped off. That has led to a significant decrease in private cars making appearances on Amtrak.

The Evelyn Henry and Warren Henry private cars (part of the Patrick Henry collection) head west on the tail end of the Zephyr just west of the west portal of Tunnel 1. These same two cars actually made an appearance on the back of #5 on this same Thursday exactly one year ago (June 15, 2023).

The sun has already ducked behind the mountains as UP 1943, the unit painted in celebration of the US military, leads an eastbound oil train out of Plain and toward Tunnel 1.

UP 1943 leads a pair of GEs eastbound on an oil train just west of Tunnel 1. It took about 90 minutes to get from East Portal to this spot, rolling slow as UP oil trains typically do. Alas, that meant the direct sunlight was gone, but there was still enough ambient light to capture the scene.

UP 1943 leads a loaded eastbound oil train out of Tunnel 1, slowly descending down the 2% grade. UP runs loaded oil trains very slow, typically coming down from the Moffat at right around 15 MPH. This beautiful June evening is no different.

As the sun casts a pleasant ray of light from behind the clouds as it sets to the west, UP 1943 rolls slowly east on the head end of an eastbound unit oil train. If you look closely, you can see a pair of DPUs on the grade below Tunnel 1 to the right side of the picture.

UP 1943 and train depart the east end of Eisele (Clay) on a clear (green) signal on the journey east toward Denver and points beyond. The foliage is just about at peek colors, with a lot of vivid greens and yellows, despite the sun having descended behind the mountains.

Just minutes after existing Eisele (Clay) heading geographically south above, this oil train has made the long 180° turn around Big Ten Loop and is now headed geographically north on the approach to the west switch of Rocky.
