It is interesting how some Warbonnets have near-pristine paint after 25 years and others, like this one, are badly faded. Units like this have picked up the nickname "Pinkbonnet" amongst railfan as the red really has faded in to more of a pink.

After spending nearly 12 hours in the siding at Leyden (for reasons unknown to me), this Denver-Provo finally has a fresh crew and is headed west. The crew onboard is actually a Denver-based crew. BNSF is sending a crew out of Grand Junction meet the train further west.

An old Santa Fe Warbonnet, that actually shows no signs of even having been patched, sits on the Denver-Provo in the siding at Leyden.

This westbound Denver-Provo departed the yard in Denver around 11:30pm the night before! For some reason, it went in to the siding at Leyden and remained there overnight. Unsure when the train would depart, I got a quick shot of it on the "sunny side" this morning.

My personal favorite engine from the late 1990s and early 2000s would have to be EMDs SD70M/SD70MAC. UP 4424, which happens to be on BNSF's Provo-Denver on this day, was one of 1000 SD70Ms originally ordered by Union Pacific. This SD70M will turn 17 this year. It was originally delivered to UP on July 18, 2001.

Couldn't help but grab a roster shot of a Warbonnet on the point of BNSF's Provo-Denver...particularly a Warbonnet in such great shape as BNSF 786!

A lot of the remaining Warbonnets in the world are oftentimes referred to as "Pinkbonnets" because the paint has faded so badly over the past 25 years. However, there are still some Warbonnets out there whose paint is darn near perfect. Case-in-point is BNSF 786, leading the Provo-Denver during the first full week of March 2018.

In the early 1990s, Santa Fe decided to resurrect the Warbonnet paint scheme and ordered some C44-9Ws, SD75Ms, and GP60s in the classic silver and red scheme. How great would it be if BNSF decided to do another round of Warbonnet units? While that is unlikely to happen, at least it is still possible to catch an occasional Warbonnet such as on this day as one leads the Provo-Denver.

A sight that is becoming less and less common! A Warbonnet leads an eastbound Provo-Denver out of Barbara's Gulch between Rocky and Leyden.

A single ES444C brings up the tail end of this Denver-Provo manifest. This is one of 100 ES44C4s that have been delivered since Tier-4 units became required. It is a "Tier-4 Credit unit", which is why it is the 4200 number range.

An ES44DC is sandwiched by two C44-9Ws as this westbound Denver-Provo has a fairly typical consist of three units on the point and one DPU on the tail end. BNSF runs their trains on the Moffat with this configuration of power more often than not lately.

Now that the manifest is in the clear on the siding, this sand train received a clear signal from the dispatcher to start pulling west out of Leyden. The two DPUs are already in Run 8!

While a loaded sand train sits on the main (you can see its two rear DPUs to the left), an eastbound manifest with a matched set of ES44s rolls slowly east on the main at Leyden. The train is facing a red signal at the east switch as another westbound (the BNSF Denver-Provo) is coming west out of town.

A CREX ES44AC and an SD70ACe bring up the tail end of this loaded sand train at Leyden. Five units will be enough to get this guy up the hill, but not quickly! It'll take over three hours before it makes it to Winter Park.

This unit sand train is slowing as it has a red signal at the west end of Leyden. The train is meeting a Provo-Lincoln that is out of Rocky. The sand train is holding the main, even after arriving first, because the manifest will be meeting two trains here at Leyden.
