I have heard from several engineers that the ES44C4, which is an A1A-A1A unit, is not ideal for heavy trains. It is more designed for fast trains in relatively flat terrains. Looks like the power desk in Denver may have agreed today as two ES44ACs and an SD70ACe lead this loaded sand train west at Leyden.

It looks as though oil is picking up in Utah again as BNSF oil-related traffic has certainly increased on the Moffat in 2018. Here, a loaded fracking sand train heads west at Leyden.

BNSF manifests on the Moffat have frequently run with a trio of units on the point lately. Not on this day, however! Six GEs...all ES44s and all in the New Image scheme...lead the Provo-Denver through Barbara's Gulch.

This eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver has a matched set of six ES44s for power! The lead unit is an ES44DC, but the following five units are all ES44C4s!

The DPU on this BNSF manifest is a (relatively new) ET44C4. The train had an ET44C4 on the head end as well, although this is one of the very early versions of the ET44C4. You can tell as the second of long hood just ahead of the radiator housing is very boxy. In later versions of the model, that housing that sticks up is contoured to look a bit more natural with the rest of the radiator.

This eastbound BNSF Provo-Lincoln is approaching a clear signal at the east end of Leyden. Highball! On occasion, BNSF manifests will get stuck at Leyden if the yard in Denver has no room for them. Fortunately for the crew today, the yard was ready and the train got a straight shot in.

In accordance with emissions rules, more and more Tier 4 units are showing up on both UP and BNSF...specifically, the ET44C4 for BNSF. Like its ES44C4 ancestor, this unit is an A1A-A1A unit, with only the outside axles on either truck being powered. This is a specification that BNSF is absolutely in love with. They haven't purchased a standard C-C unit in probably five years now.

The sun works at melting the snow on the ground on a crystal clear February morning. After about ten days of very cold temperatures, things are starting to warm up with temperatures around 40°F. A BNSF Provo-Lincoln manifest heads toward the west switch at Leyden.

Four units on BNSF's Provo-Lincoln represent power from the 1990s (a C44-9W), the 2000s (two ES44C4), and the 2010s (an ET44C4). The train is just west of Leyden, running parallel to CO-72 on the far side of the tracks and the neighborhood of Leyden Rock on this side of the tracks.

This B40-8W will likely be dropped off in Longmont to be used one of several locals that run out of Longmont each day. It probably had to be sent to Denver for a 92-day mechanical inspection.

For many, many years, it was very rare to find BNSF SD70MACs on anything other than coal trains. However, in 2018, it is becoming more common to find them in other service. Such is the case here as a 70MAC is helping out with this manifest.

BNSF's Denver to Cheyenne manifest approaches Church Ranch Lake with an SD70ACe on the point. This view, from right near the US-36 overpass, is a great spot to catch northbounds in the morning almost any time of year.

A small winter storm blew through the Front Range area overnight, leaving another inch or so of snow on the ground. The morning sun is starting to melt some of it off, but with a temperature around 20°F, it is not going very fast. Meanwhile, an eastbound BNSF manifest (Provo to Lincoln) rolls east through the beautiful, wintery scene.

A (somewhat rare) BNSF SD70ACe leader brings an eastbound BNSF train across the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road. This week has finally looked like winter should in Colorado!
