Not surprisingly, the siding at Gilluly looks pretty rusty and the ties look a bit worn. It is probably pretty infrequently that the siding is actually used these days. Similarly to Big Ten Curve in Colorado, the loops around Gilluly mean that, at some point, any train is going to be in fantastic light, even if for a short period of time. Similar to Big Ten, there are spots near Gilluly where you can see both the head end and tail end of the same train in the frame. The tracks, however, have to take a far less direct route, The rails follow some very clever engineering of loops to decrease the grade of the track, and it is roughly nine rail miles from Soldier Summit to the middle of Gilluly. Here, BNSF's Valmy coal load is descending the grade on Main 1. Far down below, above the power, you can see the bridge where US-6 crosses the track in the middle of Gilluly. A BNSF coal train slows as it begins that descent on Main 1. A yellow (Approach) signal on Main 2 indicates that an eastbound is coming. The train is headed for the Valmy power station in Nevada. That power station has plans to move to natural gas by the end of 2025, so these coal trains are likely in very short supply. This train loaded in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and is headed for the Valmy power station in Nevada. The train came over the Moffat the previous day. When the train got to Springville, DS-378 crossed the train over to Main 1. Main 1 and Main 2 do not follow the same alignment through Spanish Fork, but come back together at the throat of the canyon that leads to Soldier Summit. Here, in some of the last bit of light for the day, the Provo-Denver on Main 1 meets back up at Main 2 in Spanish Fork for the journey east over Soldier Summit.
