Yard Shots BNSF
Utah Railway and BNSF share a yard in Provo on the geographic west side of UP's mainline. The yard tracks are some of the only ones owned by BNSF in the entire state of Utah. Here, a Provo-Denver manifest sits on a yard track, waiting for a crew so it can depart east toward Denver.

Always great to catch a visitor to change the status quo up a little bit. A Ferromex ES44AC, on lease to BNSF, sits in the yard at Provo, waiting to depart east toward Denver.

BNSF's Provo-Denver is sitting in the joint Utah Railway/BNSF Yard in Provo. Hostlers just brought out the Ferromex unit and BNSF 6375 from the servicing facility and placed them on the point of the train. The crew for the train will not be called for another 3 1/2 hours, however...

It's been a few years since I last saw a GP60M (just over five years, to be exact), so it was a bit of a treat to catch one in Denver this afternoon. BNSF has been doing some rebuild work on these units, and indeed, this unit is now designated as a GP60M-3.

A number of colorful units were hanging out around BNSF's engine house this morning. Among them was this MRL SD70ACe. Now owned by BNSF after the acquisition of MRL at the start of 2024, MRL units are showing up in Denver relatively frequently.

A pretty decent looking warbonnet, particularly for 2025, sits amongst a sea of orange, waiting for its next assignment. This unit, BNSF 4706, is one of the few that actually received the warbonnet scheme with "BNSF" lettering after the merger, prior to the original Heritage scheme being decided upon.

As this westbound oil empty exits Tunnel 3, the clouds were nice and gave way to a bit of sunlight on the head end of the train as it works to traverse through the Tunnel District.

BNSF 6386 passes by a tramper and a regulator that are tied down in the house track at Plain. These guys have been working on the main in various locations between Rocky and Crescent recently. For a few days, they were tied down on the bottom end of the Rocky Spur. The oil empty passing by is headed for the oil transload facility at Wash, UT to load up.

After getting stuck in the siding at Rocky for about an hour to wait on maintenance working on the track, this BNSF oil empty finally got the green signal to continue west. Here, the train is headed west on the main at Plain. After loading, the train will return east in a 3x3 configuration.

A BNSF coal load climbs Big Ten Curve, headed west on the Moffat. The train loaded in the Powder River in Wyoming, and is headed for the Valmy Power Plant in Nevada. This coal train's days are actually likely limited. Like so many other power plants, the Valmy station is transitioning to natural gas. The coal-burning stations are slated for retirement by the end of 2025.

Three units lead this westbound BNSF coal load on the main at Rocky. A few hours ago, the ground was entirely covered in snow. But rapidly rising temperatures, now around 38°F, is resulting in the rapid melting of the snow.

I really like the contrasting foliage all visible right here in a single scene. As a loaded BNSF coal train heads west through Barbara's Gulch, the foliage in the gulch is covered in snow. Meanwhile, warming temperatures has melted most of the snow outside of the gulch.

A BNSF yard job, hauling a long string of JB Hunt double stacks, pulls across UP's Belt Line on the Front Range Sub. After crossing through the CTC limits across the diamond, the head end of the yard job is now in Restricted Limits. No track warrant needed for this switching.
