BNSF 4700-4719 were the last units delivered to BNSF in the Warbonnet scheme before orange completely took over. One of the units from this range (as well as one of the older ones from the 3-digit range) showed up on the Denver-Provo on this Saturday morning.

I got a heads up Saturday morning that BNSF's westbound Denver-Provo manifest would likely have two Warbonnets in the consist. Based on the way it appeared in the computer, it looked as though the Warbonnets were going to be the DPUs on the end of the train. Alas, the computer was playing games. Turned out they were second and third. But still, a pair of Warbonnets, regardless of where in the consist, is something I'll take any day!

An eastbound BNSF manifest holds in the siding at Leyden due to a switch malfunction at Fox Jct. When DS-86 attempted to throw the switch, it failed halfway through is throwing motion, leaving the points centered and no route aligned! The switch could not even be taken into hand throw. So, unable to reach the yard, the Provo-Denver waits! (I am not sure why the train couldn't cross over to BNSF's main at Utah Jct and run through Rennicks to Prospect Jct.)

It's been awhile since I had seen an SD9043MAC on the Moffat! UP has sold off much of their SD9043MAC fleet in the last few years. In fact, one such SD9043MAC went from UP to CIT Leasing (and Indiana Railroad) and now to Norfolk Southern. It is the third unit on this Denver-Provo at Leyden...light quickly fading.

Normally, I wouldn't bother trying to get a shot in such extreme low-light conditions. However, with SD9043MACs all but gone from US railroads, I figured it was worth it! This SD9043MAC went from UP to Indiana Railroad. The shortline received four of these (on lease) from CIT Leasing in July 2016. It was either a very short lease, or Indiana Railroad was not happy with the units. Whatever the reason, Norfolk Southern bought them and, as you can see, patched them. But for now, they are still in Indiana Railroad colors. So this was an interesting catch worth the low-light conditions!

Apologies for the grainly/low-light shot here. It is nearly a half hour past sunset as this BNSF Denver-Provo manifest heads slowly west at Leyden. The train would have arrived much sooner (and with more light), but it developed engine problems after leaving Denver and creeped up and in to Leyden at 10 MPH. The train will stop ahead between switches to figure out the problem.

I never get tired of a nice long lens shot of a train traversing the S-Curves at the bottom of Coal Creek Canyon. This westbound copper train is move away from the photographer, a pair of DPUs bringing up the tail end.

GAH! Dang poles! How great would this shot be if it weren't for the poles littering the tracks to the right. A trio of units leads this BNSF westbound as the two DPUs swing around in the foreground.

A winter scene that I never get tired of! An ES44DC and an SD70ACe bring up the tail end of a loaded copper train that is headed for Provo, UT. This is one of those unusual BNSF train that will occasionally pop up on the Moffat. I don't recall the last time there was a unit gondola train on the Moffat!

This westbound BNSF copper train shows off 20 years of paint schemes! The original "Heritage" scheme is worn by the center C44-9W. A fan favorite of many railfans to this day! Leading is a C44-9W with the "Heritage 2" scheme, which replaced the Heritage scheme only after a year or two. And third up is the so called "New Image" scheme. First unveiled in 2005, this scheme came out when Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad was reorganized as simply BNSF Railway.

A shot that has no doubt been captured thousands of times by hundreds of photographers over the years...a westbound train pulling through the S-Curves on the approach to the Blue Mountain Road Crossing. Even if the framing is the same, the content is ever-changing! Here, a BNSF unit gondola train fills the shot.

I love winter in Colorado! The snowy landscape of the Moffat is just so photogenic. A westbound BNSF unit gondola copper train trudges slowly west on the approach to the east end of Barbara's Gulch.

In addition to its standard manifest traffic on the Moffat, BNSF will occasionally send other trains over the Moffat. Such is the case on this snowy afternoon when BNSF ran a "copper train" west. The train is a unit train of open top gondolas, seen here between Leyden and Rocky.

This eastbound BNSF manifest, with five ES44DCs (well, the last two units are ES44C4s), is headed east through Leyden on a clear signal. Soon, the Grand Junction based crew will arrive in Denver and begin their rest period before taking a westbound manifest back home to Grand Junction.

When I was a kid, it was commonplace to see railroads running trains in which the engines all had the same paint scheme. After the merger frenzy of the 1990s, paint schemes became a jumbled grab bag of whose-was-who. It has finally been long enough...twenty years later...that it becoming more and more common to see trains in which all engines wear the same scheme. Case-in-point is this eastbound BNSF manifest with a match set of five ES44DCs.
