Crescent can be a tricky place to shoot, depending on the time of day. It can also depend on the time of year. The lighting is actually pretty good in the afternoon and evening in the summer months as the sun is far enough to the north to get the nose of the lead unit.

The sun found a hole in the clouds to punch through just in time for the arrival of this BNSF manifest at Crescent. The crew has been on duty for less than two hours at this point and, with the decreased traffic on the Moffat, should have no problem getting to Grand Junction before dying at 1:45am.

A single ES44DC brings up the tail end of today's Denver-Provo manifest. A lot of precipitation lately has resulted in a lot of green grass and blooming flowers.

As time marches on, scenes like these are become less and less common. A trio of C44-9Ws, all wearing the Heritage 2 paint scheme! Funny to think that these units are now becoming the "old" units on the road. Seems like yesterday they were brand new.

BNSF's westbound Denver to Provo manifest passes through the high-wide detector at MP 8.4 (Carr Street). The crew for the train was called at 1:45pm and it didn't take long for the train to depart. This is likely because BNSF's crews for trains on the Moffat are now based exclusively out of Grand Junction. So this crew was called and just had to pop over to the yard from the hotel.

A BNSF SD70ACe (somewhat rare on the Moffat) leads up the eastbound Provo to Lincoln manifest at Carr Street in Arvada. DS-86 had originally held the train in the siding at Leyden. The plan was to wait there for Amtrak. However, it was decided the train could make it down to C&S Junction fast enough to avoid delaying Amtrak. The plan worked as the Zephyr had a clear signal by the time it reached Arvada.

I was really hoping the sun would still be far enough to the east to offer up some light along the left side of the train. Turns on the train was headed directly into the sun at this point, so neither side would have been ideal. Ah well! Six units lead up BNSF's Provo to Lincoln manifest as it glides down the main at Plain.

An eastbound BNSF manifest comes through Rainbow Cut and approaches the grade crossing at Plain. Also at Plain are a pair of cars involved in a derailment a week earlier. They have been sitting on the siding (making it unusable for meets) ever since. Later in the afternoon, the West Local would come up to Plain and move the cars from the siding over to the House Track, finally freeing the siding up for DS-82.

Yard Shots BNSF
A pair of BNSF SD40-2s get ready to do some switching at the industries near Utah Junction. One of the industries served by BNSF here is Altogether Recycling. They fill up multiple carloads of material on a weekly basis. All of the track seen here was once narrow gauge and, later, "three rail" (both narrow and standard gauge). There are a few places where the narrow gauge rail can still be found in between the standard gauge rails.

While I have caught a handful of Canadian National units in Colorado (including one of the Moffat in 2008), this is the first time I've seen one leading on the Moffat. Interesting that CN orders their units with red class lights! Note them on the lead SD70M-2 on the outsides of the number boards. The train here is tying down on the siding at Leyden to wait for a relief crew.

With the elimination of Kremmling as a crew change point for BNSF, Grand Junction-based crews now run trains the entire stretch between Grand Junction and Denver (and vice versa). At least, they run them as close as they can get them! The crew on the manifest (with a pair of borrowed CN units) went on duty at 7:30am. Being that it is now 6:20pm, that gives them 70 minutes to make it to the yard. They probably could have made it, except that a traffic jam (which included Amtrak) at Utah Jct blocked all routes for the train. The crew is going to tie it down here and head for the hotel. A Denver-based crew will come and get the train later and take it the remaining 12 miles to the yard.

With only 70 minutes left on the clock and no clear route in to the yard in Denver, this eastbound BNSF manifest has been instructed to tie their train down and wait for a van to pick them up. If you look closely, you can see the orange reflective vest of the conductor through the tree to the right.

The red in the Canadian National units really make the wintery scene at Leyden pop. The Canadian units are leading a BNSF manifest east in the siding at Leyden. The train will stop at the east end and the crew will tie the train down.

It is always fun to see foreign power in Colorado! Particularly foreign power that is seldom seen here in the middle of the United States. BNSF was borrowing a pair of Canadian National units on this particular day. Originally, there were three of the red, white, and black units, but one was pulled off the train in Provo, UT.

This eastbound BNSF manifest has a pair of foreign visitors running on the point! The train, with two Canadian National units on the point, was called in Grand Junction at 7:30am and had a good run east toward Denver. The train is now taking the siding at Leyden (where it will tie down) as there is currently no route in to the yard.
