A northbound BNSF coal empty headed for the Powder River Basin approaches Cheyenne as storm clouds to the east darken. The Canadian Pacific unit was an unexpected surprise!

A trio of GEVOs, including an early-production GEVO that was originally painted in Heritage 2, lead up an early morning westbound west of Leyden. Plentiful rain (and snow) in April has led to some green pastures in June.

Prior to the start of 2016, BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest departed Denver fairly consistently in the mid-to-late afternoon. Now that these trains use crews based in Grand Junction, their departure time fluctuates. I suspect this is because the yard tries to get the train out as soon as possible after a Grand Junction crew is rested so they don't hang around the hotel too long.

The cows in the meadow alongside the tracks did not appreciate the BNSF Employee Special nearly as much as I did! As the train approached, several cows that were close to the tracks made a mad dash away and deeper into the field. The train is approaching the Northwest Parkway overpass, from which this picture was taken.

North of Broomfield, a BNSF passenger special rolls north past a lonely Cottonwood tree on the north edge of Broomfield. The train, which is an Employee Appreciate train, has power on both ends. When the train arrives in Boulder, it will reverse directions and return to Denver.

You can almost still smell the fresh paint! GE's Tier-4 compliant engines just started showing up toward the end of 2015. The standard model is designated the ET44AC. BNSF has chosen to order a variant on that model and, thus far, has exclusively received the ET44C4. Rather than being C-C trucks, these have A1A-A1A trucks, same as the ES44C4 before them.

BNSF does a pretty good job of finding some good looking power anytime it runs a passenger train. The Employee Appreciation Special was no exception! The train has a brand new ET44C4 on the north end for power. The train is at the north end of Broomfield and crossing Brainard Drive. Another railfan, driving a class car, grabs a few shots as well.

BNSF tries to show its employees that it appreciates them. One way it does this (from time-to-time) is by running an Employee Appreciation Special. A string of BNSF-owned passenger cars were put together and power placed on either end of the train. Two times (at 1pm and 6pm) on June 4th, the train departed Denver and ran north to Boulder on the Front Range Sub. After a brief stop in Boulder, the train returned to Denver. Here, as part of the evening departure, the train approaches the south switch of Broomfield.

The entire area around Rocky and Eisele (formerly Clay) is a great place to watch some train action. Particularly when there is a meet at Rocky, so as there was on this fine late Spring morning. This eastbound BNSF manifest held the siding at Rocky to await the arrival of the westbound California Zephyr. By the time the manifest got a clear signal and the trailing DPU was leaving the siding, the Zephyr could be seen on the main at Eisele, roughly three rail-miles away!

I was really hoping that the westbound Zephyr, which this BNSF manifest just met at Rocky, would have made it up to Big Ten Curve in time for this shot. Alas, it is hidden behind the hill in the distance, still on the climb up. The manifest here is about to head into Barbara's Gulch and will then pick up a little speed as it reaches Leyden.

After a brief delay in the hole at Rocky, this eastbound BNSF manifest is leaving the siding on a clear signal and will now have a straight shot the rest of the way into the yard in Denver.

The High Iron Travels special excursion train, the Front Range Explorer, brought out a lot of railfans on this particular Friday! Two of them are seen here, getting a low shot as this southbound BNSF manifest rolls across East County Line Road at Longs Peak.

This southbound manifest is pulling into the clear in the siding at Longs Peak. The train is the Cheyenne, WY to Denver, CO local manifest. It is following hot on the heels of the Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest. Those of you familiar with the latest power will recognize the lead unit as a (brand new) ET44AC.

Unfortunately, in the time it took for the train to pass by on the main at Crescent, the clouds moved back in and obscured the sun. Regardless, here is a shot of the sole DPU on the tail end of a westbound BNSF manifest passing by some Aspen trees just west of the grade crossing.
