A pair of Canadian National units bring up the tail end of an eastbound loaded coal train, getting ready to disappear into Tunnel 39 at the east end of Little Gore Canyon. This time of year, the Colorado River is just about at it lowest.

In the middle of Little Gore Canyon, an eastbound UP coal load is in between Tunnel 40 and Tunnel 39. Little Gore Canyon is a relatively short canyon, but it is also one of the narrowest and most impressive canyons on the Moffat.

The lighting is not fantastic for this shot, but the perspective is a mighty interesting one! You can see both the head end and tail end of this eastbound coal train. Three UP units lead and a pair of CN units bring up the rear.

After meeting two trains at Bond, the eastbound coal train is finally on the move on the main track. Two Canadian National DPUs bring up the tail end of the train along the Colorado River just east of Yarmony.

An SD70ACe and a C44ACM sit on a 12-car train, tied down in one of the yard tracks at Bond. The train is the MBOPH, essentially a local that shuttles cars between Phippsburg and Bond. The train usually heads up the Craig Branch on Sundays. However, there are no rested crews available today, so the train will sit until one is available.

At the crossover at Center Bond, also known as Orestod, two ES44ACs bring up the tail end of a westbound Denver-Provo manifest. It is here at Orestod, which, incidentally, is Dotsero spelled backward, the Craig Branch leaving the mainline. 100 years ago, the Craig Branch was the mainline! It wasn't until the Dotsero Cutoff was built that everything changed, creating a direct route west through the Rockies between Denver and Salt Lake City.

The westbound Zephyr, running about 35 minutes late, just passed by a westbound BNSF manifest at Yarmony. The Zephyr will meet its counterpart a few miles ahead at the siding at Bond. It will also meet an eastbound UP coal load, waiting in the east siding at Bond.

The Denver-Provo is stopped in the siding at Yarmony to allow the westbound Zephyr, running about 35 minutes late, to overtake it on the mainline. This area around Yarmony is simply beautiful part of the Moffat, the Colorado River snaking in and out of small islands. The Denver-Provo will wait at Yarmony for the eastbound Zephyr, current on the siding at Bond.

A Canadian National SD70M-2 and a C44-9W, both DC units, are leading a westbound coal empty. I assume the train originated somewhere on the Canadian National, and transferred to Union Pacific without swapping out power.

Welcome to mid-November! The sun has fully set behind the mountains here at 4:30pm as a westbound coal empty, with a pair of Canadian National units for power. The two cars to the right are at a local industry that has a lot of tanks that presumably hold petroleum products.

This westbound coal empty is only going to make it as far west as Arvada for awhile. A tie gang is still working around Leyden, and the eastbound Zephyr is in the picture. The train here is on Main 1. The next track to the right is Main 2. Next over is UP's Arvada Siding. The siding is not CTC-controlled (other than the switch at the west end). It was built to allow coal hoppers to be transferred from UP to BNSF to be taken to the Coors Brewery. The fourth track over is the transfer track from UP to BNSF's Golden Sub, the final track to the right. After Coors switched to natural gas from coal, the transfer track was not really needed anymore, and the Arvada Siding is really only used for temp storage now.
