Laurel's 1700 Utility Crew (called as such because they went on duty at 5pm) is now on the train and will take it in to the yard. There is an 500 (on duty at 5am) as well. The train will take Main 2 at CP DS007 and wait on Main 2 between Arvada and C&S Junction for the eastbound California Zephyr to pass it on Main 1. I got a heads up from a friend that BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest would be running west with a CREX-leased ES44AC on the point! These leasors showed up on BNSF in 2014 when the railroad was experiencing a power shortage. The train just met the West Local at CP DS007 and is now headed west toward Leyden where it will meet its counterpart and the eastbound California Zephyr. The crew went on duty at 11am, but the train didn't leave Denver until 4:30pm. Now, due to a fair amount of traffic on the Moffat, the train is holding. The train has a track warrant all the way in to Denver. Warbonnets that were delivered to BNSF are, in general, in better shape than those delivered to Santa Fe (as the BNSF units are newer). This coal train had to split the crossing at Nickel Street as the crew that brought it out of Denver tied it down here at Broomfield. A new crew is now on and will be putting the track back to together soon. This is a process that will soon not be necessary once Broomfield Siding has shifted north. As you can see, track and ties have been laid and the siding is now waiting on some ballast. Also visible, in the distance, is a northbound coal empty headed for the Powder River Basin. After the Chicago-Denver Z-Train passes by, the local will follow on the main and clear up on a side track at "Conoco" (the refinery in Denver) to allow the eastbound Zephyr to get through. A quartet of ET44ACs are being moved to Denver on the ZCHCDEN. These Tier 4 emissions units, built by GE, are going to be tested in coal service. Despite the eight units on the point of this Chicago-Denver Z-Train, only the first four are online. All four blue units are DIC (Dead In Consist). They are General Electric test units. Specifically, they are ET44ACs, built to meet the EPA Tier 4 requirements for emissions. Rumor has it that they are going to be put in coal service for testing.
