Four years ago, the ES44C4 was a brand new model, specifically developed by GE for BNSF. Today, BNSF has over 1,100 copies on the roster. The unit only has four traction motors. The middle axles on each truck are "dummies", making the unit an A1A-A1A unit. While BNSF management seems to love the unit, I've heard that many engineers do not care for it (due to issues with traction and loading).

A northbound Powder River Basin-bound coal empty sits stopped at milepost 12 alongside Church Ranch Lake. The train is waiting to meet a southbound at Broomfield. The coal train is too long, however, to fit in the siding without blocking any crossing. Once the southbound gets closer, the dispatcher will let this guy know that he can continue pulling in to the siding.

The Beer Run has a colorful consist here, with two CIT Rail Resource leasors and a Warbonnet C48-8W. The train is stopped and tied down just east of Lamar Street, awaiting a crew to take it the rest of the way to Golden. Note the heavy construction also happening in the area. One of the voter-approved commuter lines (the "Gold Line") will run parallel to the BNSF Golden Sub through Arvada out to Wheat Ridge. Voters approved the construction of the line (as well as several others) in 2004. It will be another two years before commuter trains are running here, as the line is scheduled to open in 2016.

The ES44C4 has become extremely popular on BNSF. In the last three years, nearly 1,000 of these units has appeared on BNSF property! The unit is different from an ES44AC in that it only has four traction motors. The center axles on both trucks are not powered, giving this unit an A1A-A1A configuration rather than a C-C configuration. This results in a unit similar to a four-axle unit, but with the weight distributed over six axles.

This snowy December afternoon was a good day for finding Warbonnets around town. Hostlers were moving three units, which included this Warbonnet SD75I, from the yard to the engine house. When BNSF reactivated their SD75Ms and SD75Is, they also renumbered them in order to make room for new delivers. The new numbers actually reflect the original numbers when the units were delivered to Santa Fe. In the case above, BNSF 282.

Got power? Most trains in 2014 don't have more than three or four units on the point. So it was cool seeing seven on the head end of this manifest. Granted, as you can tell from the exhaust, only the first three units are actually online. The last four units are all DIC (Dead In Consist), probably headed for Cheyenne or possibly the Powder River Basin for coal service.

After meeting the southbound HLAUDEN at Broomfield, this northbound manifest now has a track warrant that will take it to MP 43 in Longmont. There is a second coal empty behind this train that will take a bit more time to proceed north as it will have to continuously get new warrants following this northbound.

At the north siding switch of Broomfield, the southbound Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest takes a "sharp left" and heads in to the siding. The "sharp left" is in railroad terms, of course. The siding and the main at Broomfield are, for the most part, on separate grades and there is quite a bit of distance between them in places. The first of two northbounds the HLAUDEN will meet is sitting on the main, waiting for the train to get in the clear and then to get a track warrant to proceed north.
