Having just passed underneath I-25, the California Zephyr is now rolling south on the Greeley Sub. In a moment, it will pass underneath Terry Ranch Road on its journey south toward Colorado and Denver.

Just around the corner from Speer Jct, AMTK 15 and AMTK 134 lead a rerouted California Zephyr south on the Greeley Sub toward Denver. The famous old water tower at Speer Jct is visible in the background.

At the very north end of the Greeley Sub (at Speer Jct), the eastbound California Zephyr crosses over BNSF's Front Range Subdivision as the Zephyr begins the final leg of its detour route between Salt Lake City and Denver.

Both UP and BNSF have lines between Denver and Cheyenne. Here at Speer Jct is where they happen to cross one another at a grade separation.

Most Friday afternoon commuters on US-85 are likely unaware and indifferent to the rather unique occurrence of the California Zephyr cruising north on the Greeley Sub through Evans and toward Greeley. A bit of a rare treat for passengers aboard the Zephyr as well.

This might just turn out to be one of my favorite shots of 2020! An opportunity to get a shot like this does not happen often for a few reasons. First, the Zephyr is detouring through Wyoming and is crossing the South Platte River along US-85 on the south edge of Evans, CO. That alone is rare enough. Adding to that, however, is the fact that the Zephyr departed Denver at 3:30pm rather than its normal time of 8:05am, setting up for the great evening light.

If you are familiar with the California Zephyr and Colorado, that still may not help you in trying to determine the location of this shot! The Zephyr is just north of La Salle on UP's Greeley Sub. The train is detouring through Wyoming due to the closure of UP's Glenwood Springs Sub.

East meets west...actually, make that north meets south as we are in Platteville, CO for a very rare meeting location of the two California Zephyrs. The Grizzly Creek wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has the tracks closed, so the Zephyrs are detouring through Wyoming.

The westbound Zephyr has come to a stop in the siding at Platteville while waiting for the eastbound Zephyr. Amtrak has run regularly on the Greeley Sub at varying points in history. The San Francisco Zephyr ran here from 1971 to 1983 until Rio Grande stopped the Rio Grande Zephyr. Then, the California Zephyr started again and Amtrak left the (now) Greeley Sub. However, it returned in 1991 when Amtrak's Pioneer terminus was changed from Salt Lake City to Denver. Another change came two years later in 1993 when the Pioneer was reduced to a thrice-weekly train. Then, in 1997, the Pioneer was eliminated entirely, ending regular Amtrak train on the Greeley Sub.

The westbound California Zephyr is currently northbound in the siding at Platteville, passing by some Swift trailers parked nearby. A wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has closed the tracks and, consequently, the Zephyr is being rerouted through Wyoming between Denver and Salt Lake City. The train will meet its counterpart here.

Unfortunately, this year's Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train ended in tragedy. The train struck a pedestrian at 124th Avenue in Commerce City. I was at 120th Avenue, four blocks to the south. The crew made an emergency call to DS86 to report the incident. The train came to a stop and first responders were there almost immediately. I left and headed home right after this quick shot showing a cop arriving on scene, having a bit of a hard time keeping it together on the car ride. Nothing but prayers for the family involved and the steam crew onboard UP 844. The train remained stopped for nearly four hours as police investigated. Passengers on the train were taken off at the scene and loaded onto busses for the remainder of the trip in to town.

It has been a stormy afternoon and the Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train depart La Salle south under mostly cloudy skies, a bit a smoke from the stack drifting off. The train is accelerating up toward a track speed of 60 MPH.

UP 844 is entering a stretch of track where the top speed is 60 MPH, so the throttle is opened up, unleashing a bunch of smoke from the stack.

Even though this shot did not have the best lighting of the day, overall I believe it was my favorite shot. UP 844 and UP 1943 are leading the Cheyenne Frontier Days train toward the Terry Ranch Road overpass just south of Speer Junction.
