The California Zephyr is running right on time as it heads west through Clay. The morning sun on the plains would quickly become obscured by clouds when heading into the high country.

Derailments from the day before have resulted in congestion, delaying the westbound Zephyr a couple hours. Here at Cliff, the Zephyr will overtake (pass) a empty coal train that is sitting on the siding.

I included this picture specifically because of the green signal in the distance. It is possible that BNSF will be deactivating the CTC in place over the pass to save on money as Amtrak is essentially the only train using the tracks.

Just outside of Trinidad, the westbound Southwest Chief is running on Main 1 through the town of Starkville. Several rumors have gone around saying Main 2 will be abandoned over Raton Pass in the not-to-distant future.

Both my daughters are well-prepared (fingers in ears) for the Airchime K5LA horn that this Amtrak P42DC is equipped with!

The Southwest Chief is running on the main track through the old ATSF Yard in Trinidad. Note the work train setup to depart in the distance. The work train will follow Amtrak over Raton Pass and run to Las Vegas, NM.

The only regular visitor to Raton Pass is Amtrak's Southwest Chief, seen here. The train just passed underneath the Twin Peaks Sub and will soon make its station stop in Trinidad.

Just west of Leyden, the snow is really coming down in a typical Colorado Spring Blizzard. By the time the Zephyr would reach Crescent, there would hardly be a cloud left in the sky and the snow would rapidly be melting.

The westbound California Zephyr got into Denver 2 hours and 42 minutes late due to bad weather in the midwest. Unfortunately, it only got 13 miles west of Union Station before betting stopped for another 90 minutes! The Zephyr is stopped here on the mainline at Leyden due to the MNYRO going into emergency ahead of it. The crew on the MNYRO worked to back the train into the siding at Leyden to clear up for Amtrak.

Here is a shot that is only possible once or twice a year, if that often. This is the eastbound California Zephyr heading into Fort Morgan right around noon. Typically, the Zephyr hits this stretch of track between 9 and 10 o'clock at night, so catching it in daylight is very rare.
